Let the Christmas music parade begin...

So, it looks like Santa has taken over 99.5 WMAG in GSO... when will he hit Raleigh (on the usual suspects, Mix 101.5 and Kix 102.9)?

Didn't do me any good. The mall where I walked had K-104.7, which is still AC, though the selections weren't too bad, the music was hard to hear in most places (even though the mall is nearly empty as we are waiting to find out if the county can move offices there) and I have an ear which is stopped up and made it hard to hear anyway. After I had done enough walking, "Edge of Seventeen" was played and that was the worst thing I had heard. how can an AC in this day and age get away with so much 80s music? I won't question. At least I wasn't subject to all this new garbage.

On the way home I didn't even think to change from my usual station until the news, and when I did it was George Michael's terrible "Last Christmas". I never went back.

Thursday I'll be so far away from my station, and it'll be after sunset when I get in the car, that I should benefit.

I was surprised at how much good music there was. I had to change stations (not to Christmas music, and after dark, not easy to listen to) when I first got in the car, but I counted maybe five good songs. I can do without the high-energy big band music at Christmas but I won't change stations for it. What I do wish is that the DJs and station IDs would be as soft as the music.

I was sorry that "Happy Holiday" by Andy Williams started just before I got home. Yes, I could have turned on the radio in the kitchen. I just thought of that. But in the house WMAG is sometimes drowned out by WRFX unless I stand in one place, which i can't do while eating.

I did hear "O Holy Night" by the one person who was born to sing it, in the opinion of whoever the DJ was--Josh Groban. I do prefer the more fun songs, but of all the newer performances in the classic style, this is one of the greatest.

Still no luck yesterday.

On my usual station I heard the terrible "Christmas Through Your Eyes" by Gloria Estefan but it was dark and changing stations was too risky. Interestingly, when she sang "The Way You Look Tonight" on the same station and it sounded GOOD. She sounds good, regardless, but the instrumentals with most of her music are not what I want to hear, especially at Christmas. How absolutely wonderful "Baby I'm-a Want You" by Bread sounded after that. When the good songs are NOT the Christmas songs, that means they're pretty bad. "Diary" by Bread sounded so great this morning after another one of those less-than-ideal songs.

I had a weird experience while getting gas. "Linus and Lucy" is not a Christmas song, though it was used in that first Peanuts Christmas special. And yet when I actually paid for my gas after being told I could go ahead and fill up first, Christmas music WAS playing. It had to be WMAG.

It happened again. I forgot to look at what station was playing where I pay my water bill. Usually it's K-104.7 or a similar station. "Linus and Lucy" is a strange choice for Christmas, but it's a great song.

When I got in the car to go home, a good Johnny Mathis song was playing. Then Lara Songster started talking. I wanted to hear music. And from the sound of it, she wasn't talking just briefly. I switched back to my usual station which I could just make out along with all the other AMs that can be heard at night.

Why wouldnt an AC station get away with 80s music? 80s music is great, and Edge of Seventeen is classic. And Last Christmas is one of the best christmas songs ever.
