100.3 The Beat

I'm Surprised that they would drop "Majic 100.3" for old school Hip-Hop and throwbacks. Saint Louis doesn't have much of a history when it comes to Hip-Hop save for Nelly and Chingy, but I expect that it could do well ratings wise against the folks over at 95.5.

Given the success of the format already in other markets, and the lackluster performance of Majic, it's probably a pretty good call for iHeart, and gives 100.3 a clearer niche somewhere between 95.5 and 104.1 that it didn't have before. A shame that such a heritage brand was thrown away, but the Majic I heard over the past few months was probably the worst R&B station I've ever heard... Al Green followed by Biggie? No surprise that 95.5 ate it's lunch.

That said... for having a nice portfolio of signals, iHeart STL isn't exactly one of the company's strongest markets. The properties scream "cookie cutter", and don't really seem to perform well, even at that. At 107.7, while each market has its own preferences, I can't think of a single CHR market where the CHR is barely top-10 6+. A week before going all-Christmas, 103.3 kept its name but changed its slogan... yet again. Remy and Mason seem talented, but the morning/afternoon situation at 93.7/103.3 is just bizarre. 104.9 just comes across as the rhythmic tracks of 107.7, plus burnt out early-00's tracks you didn't really need to hear again. Heck, I'm surprised they didn't just give Louie 103.7 an upgrade to 100.3 - to me, that automated station is the most exciting thing coming out of the cluster!

I think 95.5 may use the Majic name.

If you got to listen today, you've likely noticed that not only has Tony Scott been added to weekends at WFUN, but WFUN just rebranded itself as "Old School and Today's R&B, 95.5". Listened a fair amount throughout the day, but heard none of today's R&B (yet).

I'm curious if iHeart will dump the KMJM call letters, but given that 104.9 is still KBWX, I suppose their priorities are elsewhere.

iHeart has the KMJM calls already parked on a Classic Country AM station in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, so 95.5 could grab the Majic name, but not the call letters. I've always wondered why 95.5 didn't make more use of the WFUN calls; those are pretty good calls; leftover from when 95.5 was a kid's format before they became a full market signal.

Was in Houston over the weekend and got to listen to Radio One's "Boom" classic hip-hop concept. Sounds so, so much stronger than 100.3 The Beat!

Boom is all about classic hip-hop, especially tracks from the 80's and early 90's. And sounds amazing. So far, just like Majic, 100.3 The Beat has sounded pretty unfocused. A lot of 90's/00's hip-hop and R&B; with tracks that are hardly "throwbacks" and just make me think I'm listening to 104.9. This morning, I heard "Weak" by SWV... which made me think I was listening to Majic or 95.5.

If I was a betting man, I'd say iHeart is trying to use 100.3 The Beat to take advantage of the classic hip-hop craze, while trying to retain Majic listeners. The end result is... yet another weak format on a cursed frequency.
