Carey Pena Leaving 3TV!

Carey Pena posted on her website that she will be leaving KTVK. She could not come to terms on a new contract. She will finish out the week. No immediate plans to work at another station.

I am totally shocked. Carey grew to become a great anchor. It seems that she was being groomed to be the number 1 evening newscaster.

3TV lost Yetta Gibson, now Carey. I wonder how many more will leave post KPHO merger?

Well, I certainly didn't see that coming! Wow, I wonder what happened with those negotiations. I suppose that Jamie Cerreta will step into her position at least on an interim basis. Let's face it: KPHO and KTVK have too many people for a combined newsteam. This is clearly going to get interesting.

Wow! She's been with KTVK since 1998? I remember when she used to anchor the weekend news! Sad to see her go. So curious on who will replace her. Jaime Cerreta seems to be the perfect candidate, but how bout Tess Rafols?

I'm wondering will they promote one of their reporters? However their last 3 anchors: Cerreta, Fields Moseley and Brandon Lee, were hired from different channels.

She was still on the air tonight (Nov 24). Wonder when she is actually leaving?

Today (Nov 26) was Carey's last day. There was a video tribute voiced by Brandon Lee. Showed a picture of Carey with Scott Pasmore when she started 16 years ago. The video was great.

Jaime has been doing what was Carey's shift. She's doing well, and perhaps will become permanent.

Wonder if she would keep the 4PM broadcast, or do you think they would move someone else in?

Thanks.

When Patti Kirkpatrick disappeared (Where's Patti?) Carey was basically on from 4:00 to 10:30 plus the Sunday politics show. Hopefully they will sign someone new or realign another anchor from CBS5.

I'm guessing they realign some of the anchors from CBS 5. I'm also thinking that some of the evening newscasts on 3 will be eliminated. For example, the ratings for the 10pm news on 3TV are anemic. Will they continue to have competing newscasts or will 3TV have 4pm (1 hour), 6pm (30 mins), and 9pm(1 hour) newscasts only.

KPHO's Heather Moore teamed up with Brandon Lee tonight! I think this was the first time. Probably a little bittersweet for Heather. She was fired from 3TV several years ago when KTVK got rid of a lot of people.

Heather Moore was "welcomed" back to 3TV tonight. It sounded like she's the permanent replacement for Carey Pena. Royal Norman was very cordial. Also, it might be more correct to say that Heather was laid off. All Belo stations had mandatory cutbacks around the same time.

That said, Heather's pairing with Brandon Lee didn't work particularly well. It wasn't awful, but they are going to have to work on the chemistry aspect. Perhaps Fields and Heather would be a better pairing.

Jaime was still on in the 4:00-6:30 timeslot. I'm not sure if Heather is doing just 9:00 - 10:30 with Jaime handling the early evening slots or if Heather is going to take over all of Carey's old shift.

Got home late and only saw the 6:28 signoff for GEAZ but it was Heather and Brandon.

I mis-spoke because I don't know the correct terminology. To me, 'laid off' means that it's temporary and you could be called back. At least in the automobile industry.

To me, "fired" implies that someone did something wrong or did their job poorly. "Laid Off" tends to mean that someone is gone because of general cutbacks at the company, not directly related to performance. In some cases (usually heavily unionized industries), being laid off can come with certain rights of recall later on. For instance, auto workers or airline pilots may be laid off and have rights to be recalled at a later date based on seniority.

What I meant is that I don't believe Heather was laid off because of poor performance. It was more about the cutbacks that Belo was making at the time. At Seattle's Belo affiliate, a well-liked evening meteorologist was "laid off" during the cutbacks (not due to poor performance).

Heather Moore was the anchor on the 9pm news on KTVK when the company decided to do away with that show. At that point she was not needed on the staff and was "laid off". I would guess that since it was not at the end of her contract, she received some compensation for the remainder of her contract (which probably prohibited her from joining a competing station during that time.) Heather then moved to San Diego and worked there for some time before returning to Phoenix and joining KPHO (if I remember correctly she was freelancing at first before getting a full time contract).

Having spent several decades in management in corporate America I can tell you that people who are "laid off" are generally at the bottom of the performance scale if only because if you need a smaller staff you need your best performers retained. It has become to mean essentially the same as "fired" although, as you said, being laid off sometimes means able to be recalled (although being fired does not automatically mean not able to rehire either).
