DirecTV, Disney Reach Expansive Carriage Agreement

DirecTV and The Walt Disney Co. have reached a new multiyear carriage accord, encompassing linear network renewals, as well as a host of on-demand and streaming content. The deal, financial terms of which were not disclosed, includes the Watch Disney suite of products, which has represented the last significant hole in the programmer’s TV Everywhere initiative.

I like this new deal and I'm glad that they included The Longhorn Network, and ESPN Goal Line but there was one thing that it's not part of the new carriage agreement, The WatchESPN app.

ESPN Classic is nothing but filler at this point (actually, it was always a filler channel, but with some original programming sprinkled in), and not many have access because it's on a tier with a bunch of other sports channels that no one really watches. Once the league-owned networks and college conference channels started keeping more of their archived material for themselves, ESPN Classic became pretty useless--hell, it's the only ESPN network that doesn't broadcast in HD.

I'm pretty certain that The Longhorn Network will take ESPNC's channel spot on the DirecTV lineup, right there alongside the SEC and Big Ten networks.
