Big broadcasters frantically changing struggling stations' formats to old school rap

While radio stations have seen their audience decrease as tech-savvy consumers flock to satellite radio and streaming audio, broadcasters might have finally found a format that can lure listeners back to FM: Classic hip-hop. Playlists that shine the spotlight back on artists like the Notorious B.I.G., Naughty By Nature and Missy Elliott are currently sweeping the nation, with major broadcasters like Radio One, iHeartMedia and Cumulus Media frantically changing the format of under-performing stations to the sounds of classic hip-hop, the New York Times reports.

Well, the next big format will be Celtic music(I'd like to see a radio station flip to Irish music for a few days before and after St. Patrick's Day). Or it will be radio stations playing music unedited(swear words and all) 24 hours a day.

WBQT 96.9 HD-2 in Boston is all Irish Music. Has been for years. Going back to when the HD-1 was still All-Talk.

It will never be a big format, but any station that block programs various formats of "world" music can carve out a very nice niche for itself. Years ago in Pittsburgh, brokered time polka shows use to be huge money makers for the DJs and the stations.
