GSP Fall Ratings

Surprised no one has commented on the recent Fall book. After all that talk about the nuances of WMYI's flip to Hot AC and which songs they should and shouldn't play, isn't it obvious now that the problem was flipping in the first place? I mean, a 2.3 share? That's an all-time low for 102.5. Congrats iHeart/CC on tanking a station that was once at or near the top of the heap. Unbelievable.

Welllllllll,.....I'll weigh-in first on this, whether you like it.......or whether you don't like it!

MY 102, at one-point, when owned by Amcom General, was a license to print $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ money. I remember it well. However, today their Landscaper can't even start a weed eater; hired, receiving a paycheck, but was never capable, from the beginning. We elect Presidents that way too. Years ago, it was why the 80's formatted, Star 103, failed. Again, piloted by some gal that pointed at the dash, and said...."What does that do?". However, it wasn't me, but another fellow poster, that said it, after MY's second book, with the new format....."They Botched The Flip!"....I give him the credit, not me.

It's just so typical. You see it everywhere now.
The suits are doing nothing to slow the erosion
that is now part of terrestrial radio. 200 title
playlists, 6 minutes breaks, NO talent. Voice
tracking from distant markets. Lets make 2015 the year
to totally bust balls on the morons at the wheel.

Yep....PROOF that oldies can still work, and will pull numbers.
A 2800 watt Class A beats a power house. OH, but the suits
only see money in the 18-34, 25-54 crowd. Entercom, CC, Crumulus,
all the same.

So I guess Ace and TJ haven't helped any? And if they flip again, what should they do?

Personally, with B93.7 going in a more rythmic direction (probably due to Entercom's GM wanting to chip off some of JAMZ/HOT's numbers), I wouldn't mind seeing it go CHR with a more adult leaning direction. It may not seem like much of a move, but 9/10 when I tune into MY now, they're still playing it safe with recurrents and things like Kelly Clarkson. I think this market could use a full on CHR that doesn't either have B's identity crisis or Hot's more Urban take.

Really on a top tier signal, what else could it turn to? Sure I'd love a full wattage alternative station but that's a huge risk. I just don't know what else would work. And seeing that they brought in a CHR PD from Asheville, that may have been their plan for a while now.

Charlotte has two great CHRs - Kiss and Channel 96.1, both of which are very aggressive with new music and generally less rythmic. Those two stations already probably take a chunk out of this market. I think a station actually in GSP could do some damage.

MY took too long to switch, but was sounding good. Now, it's sounding too safe. If they wanted to make it as Hot AC they really needed to take it to the next level and get a Star 94 (Atlanta) thing going, which is close to an adult CHR itself.

It's not traditional but have you heard the new online station? www.greenville.fm Not sure what their plans are but they seem to have found that Adult CHR niche. Can they attract listeners?

Well,...at this point in their game, they should find great comfort, and look forward to being a known as a "Risk Taker". They did so, when they flipped, but therein resides an eeeeeeeeeee-nigma! The flip was launched by those that had snowed their way into the job of flipping, and didn't know how, from the very beginning. The proof is your end result. They hired a business card that stated "Landscaper", and actually the holder of that card had only mowed a few lawns, while comfortably seated on a Snapper Comet (I have one of those!). What they did might have worked, but the incompetence of the execution was simply wasted payroll money. They don't seem to have a problem firing.....letting someone go, so go ankle those that screwed the pooch, and place an ad for ideas. At this point, the suits need to listen to someone, that has a track record.

I first don't believe in using a syndicated show for
morning drive. OK, so it's all about pinching a penny till
it cries in agony. Also, what they need to do is go Rhythmic oldies.
It does extremely well in Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and other
markets in the south. I bet ya it would at least double that 12+
number..OR more. Proven format.

programming

The main reason most have sat radio is because local is not what we want to hear. Most of us listen to oldies radio

Who is "us"?

When you say "most of us listen to oldies radio" it would be the logical assumption to think that "us" means seniors, folks over 65.

Mr. Ed,....You've Boobed again! You ought to be old enough to understand than listening to an Oldies formatted station has nothing to do with age. Since the songs have been around for so long, they are the sounds of time & occurrence, as well as melodic attraction, and curiosity,....not to mention being bitter puke sick of what this market offers every Broadcast day. It satisfies more than just one demo. Even with Awww-ful coverage, WRTH-FM beat WMYI-FM 12+.
That shouldn't have happened, but MY has simply ran away more listeners, than they have; and it's all (Allegedly) Auditorium Tested, and Consultant Approved!

Scooter - the songs may be "auditorium tested and consultant approved" (however you feel about it) but, if the presentation is wrong - which happens with more stations we care to remember - it's destined to fail, eventually. How many "classic hits" stations, for example, play nothing but the "safe" songs and do well in ratings and revenue? Not only is it about what music one plays, it's how the elements are delivered.

Scooter,
I am wondering if they have done any auditorium testing within the market? If I am not mistaken, CC has been doing its own "consulting" for awhile now. I left WTPT in 2007 but continued doing some voice over and imaging from home. About a year later my PC died, so I did some voice-tracking for Shine 96.7, mainly to get some studio time. I went in to meet with Steve to go over the details, and it was shocking what the place had become. I knew the culture was more subdued than I was used to because I was still at 'ROQ when CC bought them back in '97 or '98...but it was like a ghost town. Empty production studios, empty control rooms, empty hallways, cold segues on the air and just a lifeless feel to the entire place. John Landrum laughed at me when I asked him if I needed to sign up for studio time in advance. The music logs weren't even generated inside the building for most of their stations, I think Kix did his own and John did 'ESC, but the rest came from upstairs, wherever that is.

My point is, I am all for technology and think that having an automated system in place is a good thing. If it keeps the Scary Ted's and Twisted Todd's of the world from playing the wrong track because they were distracted by a young lady on the phone, then I say that's a win-win. But technology should be used to make your life easier and your product better. Instead of using it to reduce cost, why not use it to increase revenue? Yes times have changed and we have more choices than ever before, but terrestrial radio tucked it's tail between it's legs and gave up without a fight in my opinion. The listening audience isn't stupid, why would they listen radio just 'mail it in' when they have so many other things to entertain them. I guess that 2.3 isn't all that surprising when I think about it.

Since I left the business, I went back to school and got a degree in computer science. Now I spend my time developing software to automate things (ironic, huh?) and it's a thing of beauty when at 8:30am a report runs itself and goes out via email at 8:45. The best part is, I don't come in until 9:00. Bottom line: we are more efficient, and get to spend time in R&D making our product better so we can drive revenue.

My commute to Easley is about 35-40 minutes, so occasionally I'll tune in to see what the locals are doing, and I'm usually right back to my podcasts after about five minutes.

I'll send you my contact info if you want to grab a bite one of these days, assuming you still visit Easley once in a while? I'm curious if you heard Cornette tell the Maulkey brothers story on Steve Austin's podcast. I almost ran off the road I was laughing so hard, something folks USED to do when listening to the radio!

Smack,...There is a private way to send it, somewhere on this site. So, send it on, and tell stories that'll make you snort & drool. Some of them about these know-it-all, yet, know nothing, Pencilnecks, that assume all Programming, is sent with an instruction sheet on how to load it.

By the way,...What is the difference between a Consultant, and a Monkey?

Answer: The Consultant wears a smaller hat!

According to FMQB, WMYI had a 4.3 in the spring of 2014. So they manage to cut their audience in half? I'm sure whomever is pressing the F10 key to schedule music for that station is now an expert on "diary placement". That's probably what I would do!

Scooter, I can't send a private message because I haven't been a member long enough. You can email me at [email protected].

For me, respect is earned, and that can be from a distance. For some fact-less reason, Beantown Randall, has assumed that I don't respect anyone. Stand corrected again,...and hear me out. The standard Radio workers of today don't, and ain't gonna ever pull my trigger of respect. They are a penny a pound.
On this board, Boston Randy, however, has shown me a correct level of spunk. He might not ever hire me or even have the opportunity to do so, but I would hire him. If his on-air delivery sucked, it can be fixed. You want workers with teeth. So, rate that, as anyone chooses, but there ain't many, that I would even grant an interview. Poor MY 102! No wonder....only one female employee to do everything, and if they could purchase a fembot, she'd be tossed, as well.
