Mix 104.1 vs. Magic 106.7

Now I am not sure if this has been discussed yet, but there definitely seems to be a more intense battle between WBMX and WMJX within the past few months. Magic has spruced up their playlist to sound more contemporary and Mix seems to be fighting back by reverting to playing more 80's songs again. While evolution in radio is natural, I do find this change in direction for both stations interesting! Any thoughts on this? I would like to know.

Are you serious? You mean you can actually discern the difference among Magic, Mix, PI$$108, JAM'N, 'BQT, crAMP103.3? They all play the same freakin' music! You call this "choice"? For whom?

You're one of the reasons why people do not post on this board anymore.

Magic kind of marches to their own tune, they are the ratings leader for socer moms, it is everyone else that is trying to siphon market share away from them, and competitor WXKS FM "Kiss 108"

But there has been a COMPANY WIDE move by Greater Media over the last 18+ months to move to the younger demographic.

WMJX has certainly had several "tweaks" to the playlist, programming, imaging, pretty much everything, but in a subtle way.

I think you are also seeing the start of that at WROR too, with the departure of Tom Doyle, and a slight course correction in their morning show format. Granted they will never go 18-34, but they will try to keep relevant to under 55 demo that has historically been their bread and butter.

If we are to take the 6+ numbers at face value, Greater Media is doing something right as many of their properties are near the top of the 6+ ratings list.

You know, when I'm working on projects at my desk, I like to listen to Spotify, my CDs or Pandora. However, when my supervisor asks me to do a project with her, I wince because I have to listen to that "cookie cutter" approach to music on Kiss 108 and Magic 106.7. I Hate Corporate Radio!

Yep, that's gotta be the reason, alright.

I'll be dipped if anyone expects me to buy into Cadillac Jack's "vision" of "super serving" the Boston youth market with hip hop.

You don't have to buy into anything. It's just another format on the radio. Like it or leave it.

However, if you can't tell the difference between Magic and Jam'n....then I think we've identified the cause of your distress.

Both JAMN and now Magic have Cadillac Jack's influence all over them. Sadly, he's now proceeding to ruin WROR, whose format, staff, and audience he knows little about.

And, again, if you can't tell the difference between Magic and Jam'n....I don't think the problem is with Cadillac Jack.

(Who has had big successes with Jam'n, Kiss and now with Magic.)

There's nothing to ruin with WROR, the station is so mediocre. The playlist is small and repetitive, the imaging is boring. And I haven't really noticed any major changes besides a new imaging guy and a few new songs in the playlist, so how is he "ruining" it?

You are indeed correct that their playlist is entirely too small and, as a consequence, repetitive.

However, The Loren&Wally Morning Show with its ensemble of Tom Doyle, Lauren Beckham Falcone, Lung Boy, Hank Morse should not have been screwed with. And the station imaging guy did a fine job; no need to replace him with someone who sounds so Clear Channel.

Why didn't the playlist get expanded in the direction of what 103.3 WODS used to play? 'ROR need not mimic 'ZLX in its playlist.

Lots of opinions. (And worth every penny!)

Do you have any expertise or experience to back up these pronouncements?

(I mean, the man you trashed as "ruining it" has a history of success under his belt.....have you done anything that can compare that would give your opinions any weight?)

You really can't put the loss of Tom Doyle on Cadillac.. We have no idea how that played out and it's much more likely that it was a financial mandate that came down from on high.

I see. So you're saying that ONLY INSIDERS are allowed to offer opinions are what is on our airwaves? The fact that someone is a critical (read, "way more than casual") listener implies he has no credentials for offering any comments, much less any credibility, like those of you who've "been there, done that". Well, excuse me, OK?

You are certainly welcome to offer your opinions...but opinions are a dime a dozen (actually they are free), and typically worth every penny!

Opinions are everywhere...some are worth more than others.

People who understand the business and the mission of broadcasting have more valued opinions than pedestrians off the street who's opinion ("why don't you play more punk country?") is simply all about them.

Someone who offers opinions simply based on their own tastes "L&W show should never have been screwed with" "The playlist should have been expanded" "The station imaging guy is OK".....without offering any rationale besides "this is what I personally like" apparently understands none of the challenges of building an audience and making the business model work.

Cadillac Jack is a professional....not someone simply programming to his own taste. He has had a string of successes.

If you want to put your rationale for programming ideas against his, then it's not unreasonable to ask if you've had the success (and challenges) of programming a major market station.....for 20 years or so.
