95.9 The Drum???

Anyone know anything about this? They were playing RnB oldies the other day and then last night they had smooth jazz on... sounds very low budget...

95.9 is not a good choice for a low power station. I live in Marion and it's causing me reception problems with WYNT. I'm not a fan of all the lower power stations added lately. I use to get a great signal on Power 107.5, not that I even listen, but they added a low power 107.5 in Marion, WZON and now I get Power on top of the new low power station here, nothing but noise. Same thing with 107.1, use to get WHOK but now get WWGH low power. I think it's making FM radio worse.

Yep. I agree, and I wondered why 95.9 was cutting in and out a couple weeks back. I live between Powell and Delaware and never had trouble listening to WYNT. It should have stayed at 8 watts.

Seems like another complete waste of a pseudo-available frequency... I see the complaints from Marionites and can see their frustration, but why go with a low powered black talk format? No one is going to listen to this crap. No one listens to 99.3 Air One either... Why are these low powered repeaters even allowed? At least get a real station on these frequencies...

Yes, 95.9 The Drum is a new Urban Formatted radio station operating with 99 watts and having call letters W294AH. Yes, its a translator station that is presumably carrying WTOH-HD4 according to its earlier station ID announcements now WTOH-HD3 . I need to find out more because WTOH, whose main signal is 98.9 The Answer in Upper Arlington is not actually carrying any HD radio subcarriers but I suppose it is in the works. HD Radio is underutilized in the Columbus market. 98.9 is actually a strong signal. The 95.9 signal reaches most of the Columbus urban area, based upon FCC contour maps, it appears to have its transmitter just east of the Greenlawn Cemetary on the south side of Columbus, giving a strong signal to German Village, Franklinton, Hilltop, Grandview and most likely a weaker signal to Westerville, Groveport, Grove City and Dublin. This station is needed in Columbus, I live here and there is a niche demand for this format that is not being well served, Columbus has lost good coverage from magic 106.3 due to the new WZCD station called the beat 106.7 which is actually similar in format {Young Urban -Hip Hop} to 107.5 WCKX. Translators are a bit different from low power FM they are slightly stronger, this one is 99 watts. Columbus also lost its long time historic urban stations WVKO 1580 and WVKO-FM 94.7{in 1982, not to be confused with the 103.1 frequency latino formatted WVKO FM currently existing}. Columbus also lost its smooth jazz offerings, one was actually transmitting from the Marion area on Richwood's 104.3 and of course from Fairfield County {originally Lancaster but moved to Pickerington} 103.5, stations which went to an oldies '80's pop format in the place of the smooth jazz.

I need to find out more because WTOH, whose main signal is 98.9 The Answer in Upper Arlington is not actually carrying any HD radio subcarriers but I suppose it is in the works. WTOH began transmitting two additional sub channels on 1/26 HD2 is WRFD 880am owned by the same company as WTOH 98.9 and the HD3 is 95.9 the Drum as the Station ID now says

This station is needed in Columbus, I live here and there is a niche demand for this format that is not being well served, its a similar format to what is currently on 1580 WVKO "The Praise"

Columbus has lost good coverage from magic 106.3 due to the new WZCD station called the beat 106.7 which is actually similar in format {Young Urban -Hip Hop} to 107.5 WCKX. I live on the far east side of town in Reynoldsburg and I can Pick up 106.3 quite well with no effect from 106.7. as for the format Magic106.3 is a Urban AC station where Power 107.5 is a Rhythmic CHR

Columbus also lost its long time historic urban stations WVKO 1580 and WVKO-FM 94.7{in 1982, not to be confused with the 103.1 frequency latino formatted WVKO FM currently existing}. WVKO 1580am is still on the air today serving the urban market in columbus as The Praise 1580 running mostly gospel music and community information.

Jazz has a home in columbus on LP 102.1 WCRX part time and soon to be moving to a full time home at 98.5 WSAX LP

My understanding is quite a few people listen to 99.3 Air1 actually (During the last Air1 fundraiser I heard quite a few pledges mention from Columbus OH).. I am willing to bet it gets more listeners than some other spots on the dial in the market.

THE DRUM IS AWESOME. Especially nights and weekends. I find it hard to get out of my car once I get home because they are killin it.. Columbus needs more interesting radio stations. This one is really doing it for me.

I will have to try this one next time I am in the car.
What I do know about is their signal is that it isn't strong enough to knock out Dayton's WHIO (which actually transmits from near Piqua) on 95.7. I can pick that up in much of Columbus away from the center of town.

For what it's worth, the HD subchannels for WTOH are up and going. I added their HD2 (as part of WRFD) and HD3 legal IDs to tophour.com tonight if you care to hear them. The music quality of the HD3 signal leaves something to be desired, though I imagine the majority of the listening takes place on the translator.
