WASL in Dyerburg format change

WASL 100.1 in Dyersburg changed to Jack FM on Monday Mar.3. They had been an all rock format in recent years, and this is the first time since probably in the 80's that they haven't called themselves SL100. They're still carrying John Boy and Billy mornings. It seems like they're a little behind in doing this format, but I like what I've heard so far.

That's interesting. I wonder how much a license for the JACK FM brand goes for. I think it is available via a national, syndicated feed as well as individually. Last time I checked, there was a JACK FM in nearby Paragould/Jonesboro.

I see where Roger Vestal moved back to Forever Communications in February. Do they have on-air personalities for JackFM or is it all liners and sweepers?

After Clear Channel sold to Forever years ago, Roger apparently wasn't needed there any longer. He headed up the road to Dyersburg, where he's been ever since. When Forever ditched WTNV 104.1 The Eagle to launch Froggy 104, guess what appeared in the Dyersburg area? WTNV 97.3 The Eagle. When Forever ditched JohnBoy and Billy on WYNU, guess what appeared in the Dyersburg area? John Boy and Billy on WASL.

I think the timing on all of this is interesting. Forever's GM leaves first of the year, then Roger becomes GM again in Jackson, then JackFM goes on after Roger leaves Dyersburg.

I listened to WASL JackFM some this weekend, and I like it. Overmodulated, it was all liners and sweepers. However, I don't remember hearing any JackFM branding during JohnBoy and Billy.

I haven't herd any live person since the format change except for Tom Hunt doing the news. I also found out WTRO 1450 changed to carrying the True Oldies network, so I wonder if there was a massive layoff. But then I think they were automated and/or voice tracked except for drive time even before the recent changes.

Can't Stand the New Format

I personally can't stand the switch. They were actually a very good rock station with a deeper playlist than most. After 92.3 went to classic hits (sic), I listened more and more to SL100 and loved it. Now, not so much.
