Question about Rush Limbaugh on WPHT 1210 AM

Really, though, the denial had an out....and denials aren't worth much. Nor should they be. It's a business matter, and they're not obligated to tip their hand until everything is locked in place.

Big difference between WLS and WPHT, though: WLS has been moving away from all conservative political talk. WPHT has made no such move. If they'd, say, replaced the Dick Morris show with a more broad-based show, then it might make you wonder. For now, at least, they are sticking to politics. And Rush fits with that.

But do you think that going with news/talk political format, instead of being a general interest news/talk station, might be 1210 WPHT's downfall? There's a reason why their ratings are where they are right now. I wonder if a change in direction with the talk format would work for 1210 AM?

Going with poltical talk when they did, or now? In the early days of the return to talk, as WPTS then WPHT, they were a bit broader in their approach. Heck, they had Jay and Hillary from NJ 101.5 for a fleeting second. And some unique stabs at hosts, like John DeBella. None of it caught on. Political talk was still doing quite well, so moving in that direction made sense. Now, sure, political isn't what it was, but nothing is. And as has been well chronicled, WPHT is far from alone--they're about where a rational analysis would expect to find them...and they're making money. Not More-FM money, but money nonetheless.

It's easy to point out that broader, lifestyle talk hasn't been taking off. Some moderate successes--and failures--here and there. If WLS can make a go of it, more power to them. Every trend has its roots somewhere, right? And maybe that becomes a model for more stations. Or maybe it's lightning in a bottle that works only in a few places because of non-reproducible factors.

CBS can't really go guy talk, because WIP has it covered--they reduce the monotony of Chp Kelly this and Ryne Sandburg that by mixing in some other stuff. So what do they do? The logical answer for now is to keep riding the political talk train with its small but fiercely loyal listeners until it ceases to be profitable.

WPHT still makes plenty of money. There is no "downfall". Stop it.

I'm done talking about this station then since they won't change the format. Time for me to talk about the other stations in town. You guys are right. I am over obsessive with 1210 AM and its time for me to stop. Thanks for the advice.

Julius--you won't stop. You are unable to let it go. Your knowledge of the radio business is non existent .
