WZRK AM 1550

Any one have any info as to the status of this station? Is it for sale? Silent?

Last I read it was taken off the air by vandals. I noticed they did have a construction permit granted to move into Illinois. I also saw today that supposedly they came back on the air May 22,2012 according to an FCC filing.

Reason I am interested, is they used to carry a jazz/vocal format and I had heard it was pretty good, though I am too far away to hear it unless the did end up moving to Northbrook.

Ohh cool!I'll have to see if I can get it next time I am on the north side.

Yes, it was approved according to the fcc database--to move the tower to northbook. However, they would surrender night-time broadcasting.

Yeah they were forced off the air in or around January, when their tower site was vandalized and part of the ground system was stolen(copper is valuable).

Timeless Cool is a "cool" format, I was still in Chicago when it aired nights on WNTD 950. The signal in my area is not great at night, I still listened often.

It would be nice to have right now, with smooth jazz gone and no type of lite ac or nostalgia station in the market.

Do you think if Northbrook gets built they will keep Timeless Cool? I kind of suspect that CP will either be sold or be another brokered time station. I would love to see Timeless Cool on it. I could probably get it during the day when I'm in Chicago.

ya even 950am it didn't come near Crete. Exactly what I was hoping--that moving to Northbrook, it would give Chicago another option for a jazz, since its virtually gone again on the radio dial...--other than WDCB 90.9, of course.

I wonder what the hold up is with the CP. I believe they have it for quite sometime now. They should get their www site back up. I think at one point they had a fb page too.

Just me....

But I don't think there's any intention at this point in time to build a 1550 in Northbrook. If it ever does happen, I'd look for it be be an outlet for ethnic or brokered programming.

I think you will probably end up being right on this cyberdad.

Station is Defunct

In November 2010, WZRK was granted a FCC construction permit to change its city of license to Northbrook, IL with a power of 1,500 watts nondirectional daytime only. The construction permit expired & no action was ever taken.

The station went off the air in January 2014. In August 2014, "Upper Midwest Broadcasting" announced that WGLB, Inc. was buying WZRK for $100,000. No immediate plans for WZRK were announced. An application to extend the station's silent status was filed with the FCC in October 2014. In February 2015 WZRK's license was deleted by the FCC.

Too bad about WZRK. For a while in the late '80s I took care of it. Had a Bauer 701B as main, Gates BC-1F as backup and a 10W LPB with switching between the 3w and 1w nighttime levels. Had to use a FIM to set the night power levels, as we had nothing to measure the .147 amp CP current. Just set the transmitter for 30 dB lower than the 1 kW on the FIM for 1 watt. The station could actually be heard out to about 3 miles in the major (E-W) lobes. Phasor was in the north doghouse.
