Wben larry king

Hey Guys:

Would anybody know when in 1978 Larry King replaced 30 year veteran Dick Rifenburg.

I can't believe I can't find this info anywhere as important as it was. Would anybody know what happened to Dick after he was let go?

Thanks

T.J.

This would come under the heading of things I haven't thought about in a very long time! The closest I can pin it down would be around November 1978. A certain young radio talent applied for the job only to find that WBEN was going with Larry King. As for Mr. Rifenburg he was retiring so that's what happened to him. He worked at WBEN as an announcer back when the station hired only polished professionals. That young radio talent was probably better off not getting the job. He never could have followed a class act like Dick Rifenburg.

This young radio talent you are talking about is you Mike?

Thanks for the info Mike. I really appreciate it. I figured it was October or November form an article in billboard magazine from Feb 1979. The talked about the letting go of Dick. and how the ratings haven't reflected the start of Larry King. I have also read a lot of articles about Dick Rifenburg. Amazing stuff and the things he did at WBEN when he was first hired there on May 22, 1951.

Thanks again Mike

Here's a bit more on Rife. His departure from WBEN was not voluntary. Rife learned about WBEN's move to replace him from a Jamestown listener who heard Larry King mention it on WJTN, where King was already airing. Rife did not retire. He went on to become a communications instructor at Medaille College. I had the honor of working with Rife in the early 1980s when my station accepted a couple of interns from his program -- each of whom have had successful careers (Eileen Buckley and Mike McKay). It was during that time that Rife hosted a weekend afternoon music show on WEBR 970AM. I lost touch with him after that. When he died in the early '90s, I got word of his passing while I was at a management workshop. I came in that night to prepare an obit because his distinguished career deserved such recognition. I will always hold Dick Rifenberg in high regard. He was one of the many announcers whom I looked up to while growing up, hoping for a radio career. So, I was especially grateful to work with him in a professional capacity years later.

Thanks for the background Mark. I was told of the opening by Charlie Warren who did afternoon drive on WBEN for a short time before going to WWSW Pittsburgh (a dumb move if you ask me). I had worked with Charlie at WFTL in Fort Lauderdale and he is the one who told me there was an opening. I guess the staff was kept in the dark about the actual plan. Fast forward to 1985 and the same thing happened at WBT. Darn that Larry!
