Thoughts on the numbers?

Well, it looks like they are officially placing Wired in the Top 40 box. However, with the recent change in direction, ratings are flat. If CBS is serious about giving CHR a go, they need to "Amp" up 96.5 soon to give them some kind of buzz.

Who knew WIP was sold? :) (Typos can be fun.)

And apparentl hellacious weather means people can find AM radio. Which begs the question, is the band or the content that drives success of the news format?

Otherwise, does it point to any surprises? I'm not seeing it. Greater Media had a couple of nice bumps for MGK and Ben--still chugging away a decade in. Mix 106 shows a bit of life, but otherwise, everyone seems to be bobbing up and down in the normal ranges.

AFAIC CBS Radio needs to make wholesale changes with 94.1 WIP and 1210 WPHT. Both stations are tanking fast in all aspects of the stations.

94.1 WIP is definitely not "tanking fast." They're coming down off of the post-Eagles ratings surge. They're right where they always are... they're handily beating WPEN-FM most of the time, and excel in their demographics they target. They are NOT tanking.

And 1210 is doing well for what they are. Anything else on that stick, and you're not going to get anywhere near those ratings. Which is something that has been pointed out, well, MANY times.

WIP is tanking? By what measure? If it's fair to say the overall numbers are useful for little more than fun speculation, that's even more true when looking at a highly specialized format like WIP.

They're between major seasons for play by play....not that an anticipated woeful Phillies season will be a boon to anyone. But nonetheless, apart from a sudden flurry of Eagles activity, AFTER this book, it's the off season. The Flyers and Sixers are dreadful. The Phillies are going to be dreadful. And the Eagles were the source of little more than speculation about whether they woud trade up for Mariota. And yet still their overall numbers were decent.

WPHT is fine as it is. That's about what talk is going to get you. There are no, repeat no, wholesale changes that will markdly change anything at this time.

Jul,
When you hear something on the radio you don't like..then you just have to change the station. I do it all the time. I don't think the station is going under because some of their programming irritates me.

I disagree with that assessment.

In you opinion, why is WPHT going under?

I don't necessarily think it's going under. I've tuned in a few times. WPHT must be selling enough advertising to stay on. Years ago a GM told a friend of mine "If you live by the ratings you die by the ratings." Sports, News and Talk work for AM radio. But there are more options to get what you want besides radio. WPHT could be happy with their piece of the pie. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

But they are 20th in ratings and cume. How can anyone be happy with WPHT being last among the commercial radio stations in town with a 1.8 and next to last of the commercial stations in town in terms of cume. And to add insult to injury, WHYY is the number 1 news/talk station in town. There is something wrong with 1210 WPHT here, for a public radio station to be number 1 for news/talk. If CBS brass in NYC were smart, they should make major changes to the station, now. Go all syndicated talk, drop the political republican talk format and be more general talk oreinated, drop the talk format altogether , etc. Time to stop the bleeding. Ratings do matter, no matter how much money a station makes. The cume is dropping with WPHT with each book. Something's not right here.

CBS brass is smart. It's how they got to where they are.

Look beyond Philadelphia. For the public station in town to be the leader among news/talk stations is hardly unique to Philadelphia. Not by a long shot.

We had an almost (then eventually all) full-time syndicated talker in town. It didn't exactly set the world on fire.

And sure, in the big picture ratings matter. Many things matter, none more than the bottom line, however. But with that said, the ratings made available to the public don't matter. That's why they're given away for free.

These days, the public radio talker usually beats the commercial talker. No big surprises there. As has been posted, WPHT can't do much more than they are doing now. PHT is doing no better or worse than most talk stations in the country. Rush is hardly the draw that he once was, and his show is probably the most listened to on PHT and many other talkers. Problem is the audience for his show skews old and is nowhere what it was in the 90's and 2000's.
