KZPO Sold

Bummer for the old-timers:

From Radio Insight - sold to Jesse Portillo’s Big Radio Pro is acquiring five California stations in a distress sale. The buyer is a Bakersfield based Spanish language programmer and consultant.

We need more of those just like we need more R&B/Hip Hop/ Rap stations, it's pretty bad when you have to listen to AM for "White" Oldies.
Wasn't trying to sound racist with that comment but it's true , why are all Oldies stations R&B only?, as in Mega 97.9, 103.7 The Beat, KOKO 94.3, and The New 105.5., at least in LA KRTH 101.1 and KOLA 99.9 plays all of the Classic Hits. I know there is the FOX but it's programming is too narrow and limited to 400 songs from the 70s and Early 80s.

For the most part, R&B oldies resonate better with Hispanic listeners, of which there is no shortage in the SJV.

It's pretty bad that if you're over 50 you simply don't count in this market or most markets. While I appreciate what JO is doing with KYNO, it's programmed so poorly that it's a slap in the face to all that Drake brought to radio.

As for KZPO, I had the opportunity to have Jay Stevens programming a station for me back in the mid-70s. Jay was a total class act, an absolute pro, and I've always enjoyed hearing him locally.

Bummed.

The people that listen to the "white" oldies I believe are just either dying off (hate to say) or were just getting a bigger culture of people who listen to hip-hop and rap and whatever the market bears to hear in the SJ Valley. I don't feel like I'm living in America anymore!

I noticed that when 97.5 KABX switched formats not long ago, they used to play everything from Elvis, CCR, Queen, mostly 50's, 60's and 70's. NOW with their new format, it is Frankie Valle to Prince to AC/DC to LLCoolJ to Boston to Kelly Clarkson to Billy Joel. WEIRD mix of a format!! I simply just cannot listen to it anymore!

no need to worry as there will be no format change at kzpo under new owner. Jay Stevens left the station 2 years ago but his voice remains on some things.

WHEW! That's good! I bet my late mother would be happy to hear that. That station was her favorite station and it has the format that she grew up with. It is one of the very few stations left that have that kind of format, other than 920 am and 92.3 fm The Vine out of Modesto.

When did 92.9 KFSO, switch seems like about 15 years or so now I couldn't believe it. KABX only, and that didn't work south of Fresno at all. With KYNO even though it is AM I feel like we are in somewhat of a renaissance.

I just wish I could get some classic country back. 1270 used to sound great! Better than 107.1 in Bakersfield I always thought.

Didn't know music had a color to it, note to self, check cd's for color

LOL OMG I splaind this before I meant why Mega, The Beat, and etc and all FM oldies stations in Fresno will play the Temptations and The Supremes and all R&B hits, but not the Beach boys, Beatles, and the Byrds and etc, etc , get it.got it, except for KYNO ,not like LA where KRTH 101.1 and KOLA 99.9 that plays all ALL THE HITS

BTW my vinyl is black except The Beatles greatest Hits from 1962 -1966 that is Blue, CDs are silver oh I freakin quit, happy Easter!!! now back to the social networks.

BTW I.m not stuck in the 60s The Blaze 105.1 is the best rocker, miss KRZR though, and KKDJ.

Old News. Verne White will end up where Sandra Soho, aka George Smith and others did for claimming ownership of KRAT FM in Oregon. State Prison.

It would be nice if the new owners would bring back the online streaming.
It would be nice if all the royalty payment issues were resolved in such a way that stations which aren't owned by major group owners could afford to stream. One of my clients just dropped streaming at the end of April for just that reason.

I think you're going to see a lot more stations discontinue their streams in the future ... especially if that idea of adding a second royalty payment to performers ever gets enough traction to pass in Congress. With ad revenue always shaky for smaller station owners it won't take much to make the stream untenable in terms of cost.
