Changes at KYW

Jenny DeHuff of the Philadelphia Daily News tweeted Friday evening that changes coming to voices at KYW and to top brass at CBS Philly. Story in DN on Monday.

Speculation already on whether CBS-3's News Director survives. Just my humble opinion, but CBS-3's weekday evening news anchors have to be the weakest in the entire market. Ukee makes the mornings better. And I like their weather staff. But Chris May and whoever the woman is anchoring with him? Ugh.

As for changes at KYW Newsradio: wow, they just went through a bunch, with Harry Donahue retiring, Cheryl Elias apparently shifting to fill-ins only, and John O. now only doing weekend mornings. I haven't heard Al Novak reporting either. I'm surprised they still have Tony Romeo in Harrisburg. It seems like you can go weeks without hearing him.
 
Have you heard if Harry Donohue will continue on WPHT/Temple Basketball?

Harry, Cheryl, John Ost, and Al "retired" some more than others. Harry is on to doing his Temple Basketball broadcasts, John and Cheryl are back from their "retirement" as newly-hired freelancers who have regular weekend shifts and could do fill-in during other days of the week.

Al after working 6 days a week for too many years is off to retirements.

I haven't listened for a while. Does Romeo still do any anchoring?

I always envisioned this guy at the mike wearing a green bathrobe and a ten-gallon cowboy hat, martini in hand, because over the 100 or so miles between the radios here and KYW there, he sounded to me a lot like Alan Alda's Hawkeye Pierce.

Great Romeo teaser line to an upcoming story: It seems that some study about traffic flow was being undertaken on a main thoroughfare in the signal area. His line actually was 'Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike .....'
 
The changes at newsradio: Brad Segal becomes an afternoon anchor. Jim Melwert becomes new Suburban Bureau Chief.

Not the biggest change in the world. Interesting to have a Daily News reporter keeping track of something like this.

Thanks for the info on the other KYW voices. John Ost disappeared for a few weeks then reappeared. Now I know why.

I haven't heard Romeo anchor in quite some time. Used to be that he'd pop up during the week in between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Either he didn't this year, or I just didn't hear him.

I have a feeling that Chris and Jessica maybe on their way out. They need to make wholesale changes with their newscasts.

I was talking about CBS 3. They need to make changes to their newscasts, since the new boss is taking over.

But often - too often - it does. New bosses often feel the need to put their own stamp on things, or to feel that they can't justify their salary and position by seeming to do nothing. Add to that, American business is addicted to growth. First in billings (or anything) is not good enough. The line on the graph must always be going upward. Flat lines mean failure.
 
Too often, perhaps.mBut there are exceptions. How many new bosses have entered WPVI, or WBEB, or for that matter KYW radio over the long haul? Very little massive change, just continued evolution. Perhaps the new hire was given a mandate to do an extreme makeover, but perhaps he was brought in to continue the navigation. kYW TV has actually benefitted from stopping the revolving door and finding a steady, drama-free presence (cough...Larry and Alicia.....). Teeaks, sure--bosses who stay should always be striving for improvement, regardless of the industry--but dumping your anchor duo just because? Meh, seems more likely to be negative than positive.
