WIBC pulling plug on 'Rush Limbaugh Show,' takes long view

WIBC pulling plug on 'Rush Limbaugh Show,' takes long view

Tony Katz will remain at the 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. time slot. A new news show, "The 10 at 10," will air from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The show, co-hosted by WIBC news veterans Mike Wilson and Ray Steele, will feature the top ten most interesting news shows of the day. "Garrison" will air from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and "The Dana Show" will now air live from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., followed by "Chicks on the Right" from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Abdul–Hakim Shabazz from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

While Morgan expects some WIBC listeners to be “hugely disappointed” by the change, he said losing Limbaugh could open up the station to more advertising opportunities.

There are some—primarily national—advertisers that refuse to air commercials during Limbaugh’s show, Morgan explained. Emmis officials began notifying its advertisers of the change Monday.

“We believe this could open us up to a new group of advertisers,” he said.

WIBC wouldn't be the first to drop him for this reason. Who in Indy has the power to pick him up, though? Would Freedom 95 want to pick him up and drop the money management program they have going now?

Freedom 95 would be silly not to, I think. Dave Ramsey could continue to have its 12AM run.

My only question is, does Freedom 95 have the reach to make it work? Or will Rush give them a break? I don't know if it would work with the dynamic the way it was at IBC, because the ratings might not be there because there are fewer ears that can tune in. Unfortunately, since those ears are getting older, ad dollars are not going to be huge, either.

Wouldn't it be funny if one of the failing music or sports stations were to peal off and create another talk competitor with Rush as the big draw? Then, if they do it right, they wind up eating IBC's lunch? It's a long shot, but at least the first part is a possibility.

Like who? Clear Channel wouldn't blow up 103.3 for Rush Radio in Indianapolis, would they?

WFDM and WXLW would be a good fit for Rush, absent of a powerful AM or FM, and here is why:

The work that the owners of the stations have done to WXLW is tremendous. The AM's signal is far reaching now and
clear, especially here in Plainfield, where the AM comes in stronger than the FM.

Also, Rush is predominantly an AM show. The reason for FM's picking him up (IMHO) was laziness in cultivating a new format, where N/T is the Ron Popeil format; set it and forget it.
