KHHL 103.1 Karnes City

Yes KHHL has been discussed here before, but I ask again, does anyone know if this station will ever reach the end of it's missery?

It's been off the air for a year IIRC. They did file an STA but it could have expired. My understanding is that they were having problems getting a feed from San Antonio to Karnes City... Why not program it from the transmitter site temporarily in that case? All that's needed is some good music and a cheap netbook with a cheap automation program like Station Playlist Studio. They could just have a legal ID every hour.
I'm just putting an idea out there, it probably would waste some significant electricity though. At least it's not running and silent-or worse using a phone line. I guess they could rent the station out and try making as much money as they can that way if nothing else.
It only just baffles me how Alpha seems to care as much as BMP did about this station. If they're working on it, awesome! But I have yet to hear anything. :(

I honestly think the only thing that will save this station is a sale.

KHHL back on the air

I see my post must have caused something to move over at Alpha. KHHL is back on the air with ESPN Deportes. On a possibly related note 103.1 KEEP in Bandera is on, but just silent ever since yesterday.

Surprised to hear them back on. It actually sounds better than the phone quality they use to have.

To run the station at the transmitter site still requires a main studio "staff" of at least one...I doubt they have a main studio waiver....that means having someone at the tower from 8-5 5 days a week...probably claimed a loss of studio or something in their dark STA...

KOLE 1340 in Port Arthur is still dark after several months of a dark STA....claiming they lost their studios..yet the transmitter site could be used at studios (its been done before!)....but the owner, Birach of Chicago, just cannot find anyone who will pay his ridiculous rates for ad time OR LMAing the station...the grass, etc growth inside the fence at the tower site is horrible....

KHHL off the air again. Do I need to post here every week to make sure Alpha keeps it up and running? Come on guys...

They actually have a CP that, unless I'm mistaken, expires in June of this year. Uh-oh... Hope it's being built. :p

Posted too soon, it's back.

If you want my opinion they should consider simulcasting it with The App. That would extend The App's coverage area to the southeast, and if they dropped the last 3 from the name it would fit perfectly. 103 The App. Easier to say than 103-3 The App. But that's just me.

Well, at least that idea would keep KHHL doing something other than sitting dark for months on end. Not sure how many listeners you'd pick up down that way with Alternative, but KHHL certainly isn't gaining any silent.

103 The App works, but dropping the dial position altogether would do just as well. "There's an App for Alternative music in San Antonio. On Google Play at "The App", & on your radio at 103-1 & 3.

You're ID becomes a little tricky, "KTFM HD 2 Floresville, KHHL Karnes City, & K277CX. San Antonio's Alternative is on The App.", but it's buried at the TOH anyway, so really, who besides our trained listening ears would notice anyway?

One of the better ideas I've read in awhile around here and it comes from an unregistered user. Go figure.

What'd you know? KHHL is once again off the air, haven't heard it in a couple of days. Alpha really is seeming not to care about it too much.

They should have someone down there to run it in Karnes City, if you ask me. Maybe lease it out to http://www.nobullradio.com/? They'd probably gladly take it...

I'm thinking they are just turning it on to keep people like us from pitching a fit, that's all. I mean really, how hard is it to just link the thing up to KTFM and run Jack on a simulcast, and be done with it? I promise you, this wouldn't be happening if KHHL was nearer to San Antonio.

The legacy of the red headed stepsignal in Karnes City continues...

I could see the AM having difficulties but not the FM. It would seem they could do something to get back on the air. There seems to be enough business in the county for the newspaper to do well so what not the radio station? I'm guessing they don't have any local presence of any significance. I've known of situations where a station rented an office in an insurance agency with a way to get on the air from that location and paid half the monthly salary for the secretary for the insurance agency to double as a station employee. If they have a situation like that, some local option might not be available but with the advances in technology, they could do something on the cheap just to stay active.

Heck, let somebody take the station for the cost of the operation if they can't figure something out.

The red headed stepsignal

Nice one!

KHHL is back on the air with ESPN Deportes. Seems I can control Alpha by posting here... Nice!

LOL hey Alpha, can KTFM and K277CX sound cleaner like Jack?

KHHL is overmodulated and distorted. It's really sad when a big company like Alpha doesn't check the red-headed stepsignal, and can't get even the audio levels on it right.

If I worked anywhere at Alpha, I'd check the station every day and make sure it was not broadcasting too loud for the signal. Isn't overmodulation of your signals illegal?
KHHL does have some value although Alpha is probably using the wrong format on it right now. I'm not sure how well Spanish sports talk does down here in south TX, around KHHL's coverage area in the sticks. Probably not very well.
I don't think there is any classic rock or classic hits down there, is there? Or they could simulcast The App... And 103.3 sounds like it's overmodulated too. Or maybe that's because I can't get a very strong signal for both stations, and a weak signal gets distorted more easily when the volume levels are all squashed together at the very top, or above the top.

Alpha Media SA is huge cluster fck. They need new management.

Have you seen today's PPM's? BTW, Alpha SA stations are no longer available on tunein. Alpha SA seems similar to Border Media, but then again, the same staff remains in place.

100% modulation on FM is an arbitrary concept. It means a frequency swing of plus / minus 75 kHz. The standard could just as well be plus / minus 50 kHz or 100 kHz.

I was in a loudness war in a market where I consulted. We did considerable testing with various consumer radios, and determined that we would modulate 130%. Going higher caused our Optimod 8000 to start reducing the stereo pilot percentage, and going over 140% started to exceed the passband of some radios producing a crunching effect.

But "overmodulation" does not cause distortion under the situations sometimes found in the US... a few percent on occasion.

Where overmodulation does distort is on AM, where exceeding 100% on negative peaks causes carrier supression which sounds just horrible.

So Alpha went Nazi and pulled their stations off TuneIn? LOL I did like using one app for all my stations... From an outsider's prespective they need to put them back.

I do know that recently KJXK fixed their audio settings for a while and took out some of the distortion. Do you think that had something to do with their PPMs? Speaking of PPMs, where can one check those? I lost the link that was posted here a while ago.

Checking TuneIn, it looks like most, if not all, the Alpha stations are on TuneIn. I'm even thinking Alpha signed a deal with TuneIn. It added the Access.1 stations it acquired back to TuneIn recently. I suspect Alpha is still in the process of moving the San Antonio stations to a new streaming provider and will have them back shortly.
