KEES 1430 Gladewater off the air

I have noticed that KEES has been off the air now for around 6 months. Is Salt of the Earth just another Jerry Russell style company? where the rules done matter? There is no STA on file. I listened to the religious music everyday. Talk about not serving the community and "hogging" bandwidth.

I agree! KEES has been sporadically broadcasting ever since Salt of the Earth bought them about 3 years ago. Most of the time they're off the air and when they are barely on (probably to keep their license), the audio is tinny and they're on low power (maybe theft?). KEES uses the Musical Gospel Soul Food Network for programming, but I've never heard any local station ID's in a long time. While on the other hand KGLD 1330 in Tyler which Salt of the Earth also owns is always on the air. They should just simulcast these two stations together. I'm tired of so many AM station owners treating their stations like ghetto slumlords.

Unfortunately, in lots of areas, AM radio has become the home of slumlords. East Texas has not been exempt. It is really sad. Since I own a couple of AM stations, I hate it when this kind of stuff happens. It also degrades the worth of my stations along with theirs.

Not long ago somebody asked me "What is AM for?" I have to admit I was taken back, but the questioner was only 16 years old. He had never listened to AM radio. It is hard to convince people to try AM, since their experience has usually been negative thanks to people who take no pride in their product. That seems to happen way too frequently.

Wait a minute. Salt of the Earth? That's Darrell Martin's DBA, isn't it? I'm pretty sure it is, and oh boy, the stories that I and CW can tell you about Martin owned stations being off the air. Do a quick search on KYOK in Conroe or KZZB in Beaumont to get an idea of what I mean. If KEES is owned by him, I wouldn't hold my breath for it to be a regular part of your radio dial.

Well KCHL here in San Antonio, a Martin station, does well. I can hear it all the time although the audio signal's not very loud.

If you go to the trouble to own and operate a radio station (believe me, it is trouble) why on earth would you want to be off the air?

My only guess is people with either not enough money, or just two much for their own good.

There seems to be a real problem with Martin not quite being legal, I really wish someone would notify the FCC so that they might do something about it, whether fine him to the point of selling or just take the license away and give it to someone who will give a crap about it

KEES is on again, off again, and with their terrible audio and low power I can't believe that they have any regular listeners. I think that when Salt of the Earth bought them a few years ago we assumed that they would become a simulcast for KGLD, but that never materialized. Not sure why.

With the exception of 1240, Longview area AM is basically dead. 1280 has been gone for 20 years, 1430 is in the coffin, and even 1370 is used as a garbage signal with terrible audio and dead air at night. So sad.

It is sad. You can add KZEY, KOFY (KHYM) and Daingerfileld's KNGR (KEGG) to the list of dead AM stations in East Texas, done in by a dying band or bad owners.

There is little doubt that the band is dying, but a lot of it is self-inflicted. Yes, noise and interference are a real issue, but when you put crap on the air, how can you expect anyone to listen? Wasn't it KOFY that broadcast a loud hum (without any other audio) 24/7 for about six months before it finally went off the air? Things like that really make you wonder.....

Dangerfield's station didn't have much choice in the matter, did they? KGOW's signing on the 46kW rig aiming directly at you guys pretty much put the nail in the coffin for KNGR, as I recall reading.

Yep! I remember catching KOFY humming loud and clear into Oklahoma while I was on driving late at night on Interstate 35 south through the hills of Pauls Valley OK around 2007! I guess the power bill was still being paid for the transmitter, if not the studio, if one still existed by then.

The owners of KGOW offered to help pay KNGR to move to a new frequency, but the owner didn't want to do it. Then he died and his widow shut the station down. I heard somewhere (maybe the old Radio-Info site) they were trying to get an FM translator.

Martin is current running an illegal fm translator for kzzb in Beaumont. Complaints continue to be filed with the FCC regarding this.
