KTVK 3.2 and 3.3 Useless

KTVK (virtual channel 3) recently dropped THIS-TV on their 3.2 diginet and are now broadcasting a news and weather loop on 3.2 and a weather loop on 3.3. The main problem with this (no pun intended) is that both loops are from earlier aired programs on the 3.1 channel and usually very outdated on the subs. Particularly uninteresting are the weather and traffic reports from early in the morning and aired throughout the day.

Are these useless channels placeholders for something far more interesting or is this a monumental mistake by KTVK/KPHO suits?

Phoenix channel changes 04/13-04/15 2015

3.2 AZ News 24/7 is the same programming schedule as Arizona NewsChannel on Cox Cable channel 82 (previously channel 14)

3.3 Weather was formally on 5.2

Cosi TV is on both 5.2 and 39.3

This TV moved to 38.5

Forgive the clueless question by the non-Phoenix resident, but is there any common ownership between channels 3, 5, 38, 39 and the cable company? It might help explain this.

The AZ News Channel on Cox Cable in Phoenix is programmed by Channel 3 News Dept.

Channels 3 & 5 are a duopoly owned by Meredith.

KTAZ, virtual and UHF digital channel 39, is a Telemundo owned-and-operated television station. The station is owned by the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations subsidiary of NBCUniversal.

K38IZ-D, is a low-power television station , providing over-the-air service in digital on UHF channel 38 . It is owned by Spanish Independent Broadcast Network of Phoenix and operates as a Spanish-language independent station.

NBCU kinda shoehorned Cozi onto KTAZ (which it has invested in significantly in recent years, like other Telemundo stations).

As for K38IZ, this is kind of a coup for them (they have some random subs, including Tuff TV and ZUUS Country) but I don't know if channel 38 has the resources to take advantage of it. The station was founded by a bunch of expats from Durango, Mexico and has a longer history programming in Spanish than it does in English.

This non-Phoenix resident actually lives in Tempe (a suburb).

Thank you all for providing the requested information. Cozi piggybacked on a Telemundo O&O station makes sense.

Are either of the Meredith stations the NBC affiliate in the market?

NBC is Gannet-owned KPNX Channel 12. KTVK/3 is an independent, and KPHO/5 is CBS.

Thank you for the further requested data. This shuffle of diginets seems perfectly logical to me when all that is taken into account.

Not to me. Who would be interested in watching this morning's traffic and weather sometime later in the day? The repeated news segments I can partially understand except that news in the Phoenix market is regurgitated almost hourly amongst our various TV outlets. No need to watch an outdated broadcast.

KTVK sends THIS-TV to an unwatchable LPTV? I realize that subs like THIS don't draw huge audiences but I would think it would be significantly more than rehashed news, traffic and weather.

Couldn't agree more........

As a viewer, I cannot understand the rationale for carrying "news" that is
hours old. With the advent of the internet and instantaneous information,
there is no need to carry outdated news. As for the weather, on 3.3, the
same is true. KTVK would have been better off to continue with "THIS."
KPHO could have or should have added "COZI" on 5.2 or 5.3 if they decided
to keep "weather now." In the end, there's no doubt that MONEY drove
the decisions to make the changes they did..........

Have any of you thought to ask station management what their rationale was?

I disagree. I often "catch up" on local news by watching the repeats on Cox. Last night, I arrived home at 6:25pm -- too late to see the local news on Sunday. I immediately turned on the Cox news channel and watched 3TV's 5pm news to see what was going on. Other times, I have errands to run in the morning and still would like to see GMAZ later in the day (again on the weekends when there are far fewer newscasts).

As I stated before, it isn't the replay of the news segment I find totally useless but rather the traffic and weather reports. But even if one misses the live news show, in Phoenix anyway, there is another one on a different channel just a few minutes away. There is so much repetition it is crazy.

Other options available.......

Please help me out......... You couldn't go to your computer and get the same
information via the internet???? Wouldn't that information be current and not
one, two or three hours old???? Usually, there's no more than a few hours between
newscasts.....

Unfortunately, most stations these days have cut back so much that it's hard
to have someone answer the phone, much less get access to anyone with
any real information...... When a translator from one of the Phoenix stations
has issues or stops functioning, most stations have no real way to let the
engineering department know. I know, I live in Prescott, AZ and it took years
of trying to find out contact information for engineering personnel from a few
of the stations......

Where on the internet is there current local news? azcentral.com is often not updated unless there is breaking news (and without clicking on all the links, you have no idea if the story was posted at 3am or 3pm). On the weekends, the television stations don't actively update their sites unless the sky is falling.

GMAZ has a lot of informational content and interviews as well. I love the Garden Guy's tips, Dr. Art Mollen's health-related news, and Debbie from Home Depot often has interesting tips. It's not all about "breaking news". Plus, to me, watching GMAZ is actually enjoyable.

For national and international stories, I agree that the internet is great source. CNN, CNN.com, and CBSN are all really good sources as well.

I applaud TV stations which uses one of their subchannels to replay news segments from the most recent newscast. In Portland ME, both the ABC and NBC stations do it. They don't just run an entire newscast again. They record about five-ten minutes of news and sports, just the top stories, done just for these channels, although they are lifted from the main newscast. They don't carry traffic but they do have weather, which is OK since these channels are updated every six hours on weekdays, a bit longer on weekends. The ABC station also runs weather segments from AccuWeather, although those are more national in nature.
