KMEN Mendota Silent

KMEN FM 100.5 A has been silent for a few months. Not alot of interest on the board about it , but does anyone know what is happening at KMEN ? Owner claims loss of Studio and lack of cash flow may bring a future sale. Has anyone any update?

I'm going to guess that there might be 3 or 4 hundred people in the world that know that there is a radio station in Mendota with the call letters KMEN that broadcasts on 100.5 mHz. Of those, maybe 1% are familiar with this board and only half of those will post here regarding KMEN. That 1/2 of 1% is you and I.

Oh ya, and of those 3 or 4 hundred with some awareness that KMEN exists, half of those, like myself, don't even live within range of hearing the signal.

I just looked at the 60dBU contour of KMEN on a Google map (via the FCC CDBS) and converting the display to satellite imagery I didn't see very many populated areas in the coverage area.

There can't be more than a couple thousand people in there. Why was this station even licensed?

There are 13,000 in the 65 dbu contour. It is listed as a simulcast with KMQA in the Visalia market. It is part of the Casa Media Partners group that got all the Luna Communications stations when that group went into bankruptcy receivership.

Well, I wonder if a move to the KBHH antenna location would be possible for KMEN. Financially feasible? Doubtful, but technically?

NO ! Relocation to the KBHH site is NOT possible. However KJZN 105.5 B1 San Joaquin could move back to the KBHH site.

So -- now that we have your impressions of KMEN and Mendota -- what are your impressions of Firebaugh and the KYAF coverage ?

Thanks.

Went out to the KMEN Transmitter Site on Monday to see if they kept up their end of the deal under an STA Silent... No Lights. I come back there Tuesday Night and lo and behold, lights again (for whatever my comment is worth). Interesting to point out the tower site sits where Stamoules would pack the crops in the summer (I can't tell if it is Stamoules property or not).

Doesn't KAAT 103.3 cover the area of the simulcast of KMEN, that they did before leaving the air.
I mean maybe they didn't thing with KAAT it wasn't worth running it anymore.

Looks like the station is up for sale. Not expected to return to the air soon.

Really? Any idea who is offering it, and how much they want for it?

Watch Out !! This station or channel could be Verne J White's next target -- now that he seems to have lost control of Firebaugh and Avenal. Keep your ears on 100.5.

Casa Media - owners of KMEN have 11 days left to get back "On The Air" - or KMEN will be just another deleted broadcast station. Casa Media has filed Chapter 11 and is deep in ink and mud with the bank. Casa told FCC that they are looking at an
"UPGRADE" for the Class A station on 100.5 and are trying to come up with a NEW FORMAT for KMEN.

They most likely will sign back on and then back OFF THE AIR -- much like KPSV 91.9 B1 in Tulare. I have two bucks on this one. Any takers ??

At this point, the bigger question is KMQA or KMEN???

Casa (Moon Broadcast Partners, LLC aka MPB Licensees, LLC) filed for Chapter 11 (re-organization). They have stated that they do not intend to sell any radio stations. Just their television division in Miami. For the past several months, the Porterville station has been able to reach Mendota without the need for KMEN. If they do sell KMEN, KMQA would have to be sold together, otherwise KMEN has no hope to return to the airwaves. KMQA already covers Mendota, so does 103.1 KAAT. They should either drop the license and abandon the transmitter site, which is on Stamoules' land. or sell KMQA and KMEN as a package.

KBHH Kerman is another station that has had a history of 11th hour broadcasting to keep their license intact.

Another lost station? Not likely. Just taking care of a mistake that should have never happened, among other things. If they intend to keep Porterville, Mendota needs to be done away with anyway.

EXCEPT -- for the fact that KMEN - 100.5 class A is the ONLY allocation at Mendota - it can NOT be deleted. And there is no other available channel at Mendota. They can turn in the license for KMEN - but someone else can then apply for 100.5 A at Mendota.

So -- There is no Bigger Question. It's put it back on the air -- or the FCC will cancel the license, but NOT the channel allotment.

I say - sell off KMEN.

That's the old methodology.

Ever since the auction process was instituted, a station surrendering its license to be cancelled deletes the channel from the allotment table and a petition for rulemaking must be submitted for the allotment to be put back in the table and then included in the next FM auction.

This is fresh in my mind because I just this morning read the FCC notice for the next auction. Someone requested that the allotment for silent/deleted KSLK in Visalia be included but the Commission specifically says the allotment has to be added back in first.
