104.9 WOW FM Gainesville

It’s just shy a year JVC Media debuted Classic Hits 104.9 WOW FM (WYGC) in Gainesville. I’ve given the station a listen this past week to see what was happening. I must confess I know so very little about the Gainesville radio market. There’s some enthusiastic radio fans and those in the business in that area though. When I presented the Labor Day music countdown last year, I had some very interesting conversations about the format and the music with a good number of people from Gainesville and even Ocala. I never found the time to really listen to WOW FM despite a number of requests to do so. Perhaps it’s better late than never but I did keep my promise!

According to online research, WYGC is a Class A at 3,200 watts and HAAT at 137 meters. Well, it’s not flamethrower signal. However, if the station can be heard well enough in places of business in Gainesville, and even residences, then of course, that’s a good thing for the format and the future. That could play into a suggestion for a midday talent.

Overall, I’m impressed. For starters, I do love the brand name – WOW! That means nothing to listeners if the music doesn’t convey WOW! In the number of times I tuned in via streaming, I found a song fitting that category. Most of the “wow” songs are from the 70’s.(Strawberry Letter 23, Kung Fu Fighting & The Rapper) to name just three. The 80’s are more along the lines of what I hear elsewhere but that’s not to say wow 80’s songs don’t exist. I couldn't find an actual playlist often found at other station sites. I heard Madonna featured frequently. Her music has really found a home on Classic Hits stations. She owned the 80’s pop and I heard many of her great songs.

What I don’t know is the clock. If songs are not properly rotated and if the playlist gets stale without additions and drops, then listeners will not be wowed and will head elsewhere. Hopefully, that isn’t the case.

There’s a number of syndicated shows 104.9 WOW FM offers and the one that delights me the most is Scott Shannon’s new program – America’s Greatest Hits. With specialty themed countdowns and imaginative programing and Scott himself, it really proves to be an awesome show. I’m delighted these guys decided to go with the show. I’m been listening for hours now as matter of fact.

The schedule lists AT 40 – The 70’s Sunday at 6AM. Another area says 9AM (I think). I hope it’s the early time. I absolutely love the program. However, my feeling is the nature of the program offers many obscure songs in the first half of the program. Listeners tend to get uncomfortable with the unfamiliar and tune out. Virtually, everyone who offers that program starts it as early as possible to negate any negative effects. That’s my recommendation here.

I also noticed AT40 – The 80’s is featured on Saturday at 5PM according to the schedule. In addition to what I said above concerning listener tune out over obscure songs, I think it goes even a step further. As the 80’s progressed, hit music was no longer a national music as it was in the 70’s. With AM mass-appeal type programming gone, music radio grew even more fragmented. It’s just a tough situation. The other thing is if the show happens to be from the very late 80’s, all those songs played one right after another can give the station a momentary identity problem. There would be an inconsistency in sound – not good. I’d move AT40’s – The 80’s to very early Saturday morning & swap with Scott Shannon and a show that is a better fit in my view for a daypart that has more listeners and potentially positive impacts. Even better, I’d dump it!

I’m delighted to see the station is live and local in morning and afternoon drive. I am not familiar with Wolf Bowers who is their morning jock. From what I read, he’s a known personality for the Gainesville area and so that’s perfectly fine. I’m happy to see JoJo Kincaid on in the afternoons. I’ve noticed he sounds so incredibly relaxed and happy. He was probably in a pressure-cooker at WRBQ.

Middays are automated. From all I know and experienced, middays is a daypart that can see time spent listening increase if there is a hook. The music variety helps and is office-friendly but the Greatest Hits format lends itself so well to personality. Middays seems to call out for a friendly voice helping the folks get through their workday. I believe it’s an investment worth making – even voice tracked – that’s fine. I’d love to see a decision to add personality in 10-3, especially with a female talent.

Last on the wish list would be Tom Kent at nights. I’ve never been that big on syndicated programming but his program has lots of “wow” songs and I believe it would be a perfect accompaniment. I’ve noticed WOW FM really does offer music variety. That’s what Tom Kent’s program is all about. If a Tom Kent is too expensive for weeknights, then I suggest some specialty programming at night. It’s absolutely amazing experiencing what is happening in greatest Hits formats. I’d also like them to look at the totally tubular songs Magic 102.7 (South Florida) is doing on Friday nights and offer something like that on Saturday nights. It’s worth a try. Listeners are in a party mood then and that kind of music would work well.

What a fun format! The songs and personality make such an incredible difference and I truly believe WOW FM has nailed it on a number of fronts. With some programming modifications and additional investments, I believe they can improve on what I believe is a good foundation. I’ve added WOW FM to my streaming stations list. I only wish I would have done it earlier. Kudos – I hope you stick with the format! I've looked through your social media sites and listeners seem pleased they have their station. It's always a shame when they lose what they love. IMO, the Greatest Hits format is the most exciting and alive format available for middle-aged adults on the radio. Best of luck! I'm hoping others familiar with Gainesville radio will give us their take.

John - Haven't posted on here much in ages, but seeing you post about WOW FM, I had to chime in.

About eight months ago I moved to Gainesville so I am fully aware of what the radio market here brings. But I will focus on WOW FM for the moment.

WOW has been impressive after the brought in Wolf and JoJo after the first jocks they had just literally was not performing up to what JVC wanted. Glad they have these two great folks who clearly know the music and love having fun. For JoJo starting his radio career here in Gainesville, finishing it here is just as awesome, if that is indeed plan.

The music and there is a lot of that goes off WOW! One night driving across town from a high school football game, Marylin McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr.'s "You Don't Have To Be A Star (To Be In My Show) came on and I about flipped. They pull the songs out that not even Magic would have touched.

I also notice that there is a lot of Q105 type things also being used with the music and the station. Wolf Bowers is the PD there, but between him and JoJo they make this Class A station sound like it should be on a 100k flamethrower.

When I look at Gainesville and then look at Jacksonville with their respective markets, it seems to me that Jacksonville would want to do better. However, it is sad and I don't think big corporate radio in Jax frankly cares. Gainesville owns it with a variety of formats.

Back to the topic here, JVC just moved WOW and Party 100.9 from NW 13th St. to new studios on the street from on W. University Ave in Downtown Gainesville near the University. They are trying to bring back the thought of seeing the DJ from the street at the radio station. I think this is brilliant.

Overall, I can tell you my car radio has plenty to listen to with the stations here, but my presets go like this just to give an idea:
1. WOW 104.9
2. WIND-FM 92.5 (WNDT Alachua)
3. Gold 99 (99.5 FM WGMW LaCrosse)
4. 98.5 KTK (WKTK Crystal River)
5. Country 103.7 The Gator (WRUF-FM Gainesville)
6. 93.7 K-Country (WOGK Ocala)

Of course the younger crowd has Party, Q92 and Kiss 105.3. For any age level in this market, folks are served with a least one station if not more of things it listen to.

Anyways, I can answer more if there is any thing else to float out there! Take care!

JVC is a class act and clearly has its act together; understanding personality radio and is making radio local and live once again with its stations in all of its markets. JVC's WOTW Orlando is already off to a great start, and locally in Gainesville, WOW-FM is virtually a carbon copy of personality driven Top 40 radio from the '70s and early '80s which attracts a larger listener base which makes advertisers very happy. Everyone wins.

You are right about this Mark! Now it makes me want to see JVC get their hands on some stations in Jacksonville just to give that market a shake up. What they are doing here in Florida is really amazing and I only wish them the best in the years to come.

Adding Jo Jo Kincaid and Wolf Bowers to WOW 104.9 was a major coup for JVC. They are both major market talent, with a proven record to show for it, in a medium market, giving WOW a major market sound. I have no doubts JVC will succeed and succeed WELL!!!

Hi Josh. It’s good hearing from you. It was also refreshing seeing Dr. Tillery refer to JVC Media as a “Class Act.” That’s not something you hear very often as a description for radio ownership. Unfortunately, I have grown so very skeptical. It’s the nature of the business to see formats come and go. However, many changes are no longer even subtle. Station popularity, quality programming, heritage and even listener loyalty mean very little. It’s about what owners and managers want instead. I will defer to your judgment JVC Media is listener-centric in their decision making.

Josh, as far as Jacksonville goes, it all came down to luck of the draw in ownership and management. If you look at all that’s happened over the last 10-11 years, so very much was lost and so very little remains. It’s a shame and it’s very sad seeing where the market is today given Jacksonville’s proud and dynamic radio history. I’ve always been an optimistic person. However, the Jax radio landscape looks totally grim. Where would a JVC even go if they wanted to buy station? Too bad, they didn’t buy 94.1 and 100.7 or even one of those stations when there was the opportunity. So depressing seeing the fate of those two stations. I always believed, especially in the case of 94.1, a WOW FM type station would have been a perfect fit.

The silver lining is I can listen to WOW FM via streaming at home. It’s a great, little station with a big sound and really good music mix. Kudos to JVC Media for giving adult listeners in Gainesville personality radio and lots of hit music not normally heard anywhere else.

JohnJax, as always, it is a pleasure to read your insights on the industry as you seem to have your finger on the pulse on many aspects of the industry as a whole. I can see that you have a real passion for radio and the radio industry, and I always walk away feeling I have learned something useful from your contributions.

I see Charlie Tuna has joined WOW-FM middays. Talk about WOW - what a legend! He's been around for what - 40 + years? Have heard him over the years at KRTH in L.A. and I heard him via streaming for a long time doing a 70s show on former Greatest Hits WDRC-FM from Hartford, Ct.

Earlier in this string I talked about the importance of middays in Greatest Hits formats. I'm so happy to see and hear that has become reality. I'm impressed. Kudos to JVC Media and the Gainesville market once again. This is heads and shoulders above lifeless radio. It's showing me a commitment to the format and that means a lot. Here's another fine example of what is missing in Jax.

When time permits, I'd love to visit the station. Being on the inside of things has long been a rush for me! Gainesville's a cool town anyway.

Wow 104.9 is definitely the radio mold that other classic hits stations can follow and get it right. In fact, all of JVCs stations are well orchestrated, formatted and managed. I had the privilege recently to visit JVCs Gainesville studios and offices and i can tell you its first rate, and state-of-the-art all the way.

Not to be a Debbie Downer but Charlie Tuna is Syndicated Classic Hits,Country & AC via Steve Wall’s Talent Farm. JVC is all of a sudden also carrying the complete syndication of NASH-FM on their Orlando Country Outlet including Americas Morning Show with Blair Garner,Kickin' it with Kix and some other NASH Syndicated Fare...So I am not totally on the JVC Bandwagon-there is still a good amount of Syndication & Voice Tracking.

JVCs Ocala stations - WTRS and WMFQ - are local and live throughout the day while the Gainesville stations - Wow and Party - are local and live during key day-parts, namely morning and afternoon drive which is prime-time for radio. So they are local and live where it counts the most. As for Orlando, I'm sure JVC decided the Nash programming for morning drive was superior to anything else that was available. Most of the other day-parts on The Wolf are local and live.
