has Ben-FM streamlined it's playlist?

I ask because last night/early this morning, I listen to Ben for over an hour, and every song they played was from the 80's or a remake of an 80's hit, AND I LOVED IT!!!! If this the new format, I just found my new favorite station.

A good while back, it became very 80s/90s focused with a smattering of 2000s rock. The more pop-ish currents (at the time) they once had--Katy Perry, Adelle, Pink, etc.--went away.

You are def correct Bob. I think Ben-FM is blocking WOGL from being an 80s focused Classic Hits Station. All of the other Jack or Ben Fm's around the country are owned by CBS except in Philly where its owned by Greater Media. I believe Ben-FM is happy to block WOGL and make them still play 60s, 70s and 80s instead of late 70s, 80s and early 90s.

There are some variety hits stations not owned by CBS.

But as to Philly, I don't think Ben is the primary reason, WOGL differs from many other CBS classic hits outlets. CBS is far from afraid of competition. Heck, they're willing to try to take on Q, or at lest swim in the same space. If their research said dumping the '60s and jumping heavier into the '80s would be advantageous, they'd be doing it. They already have some valuable cross promotional platforms that Greater Media lacks, and don't seem averse to spending money (maybe not Jerry Lee money, but still) on marketing. I don't see a reason they'd be afraid to try to use some of that muscle if there were a payoff.

But markets aren't all alike. If the target audience here is more accepting, even welcoming, of the heavier concentration of '60s, then for now it makes sense to, generally, stay the course and transition at a different pace than, say, LA.

That is a great point Bob...but I thought that WOGL according to David Eduardo was 12th the first 3 months of the year in all important money demo 35-44, while Krth was 4th by cutting out the 60s and adding 80s and some early 90s.

I believe he did as well, but to be fair, different markets, different audiences and different competitive landscapes. I was thinking more that emulating KRTH might not be the slam dunk it appears, on the surface, given the variables. And I would wager, were I a betting person, that there's research telling them as much. Not to say the day isn't on the horizon, but it may just be further out here than it is there.

I'm a Ben fan, and even I'm surprised by some of the recent numbers. And I don't doubt there are other people eyeing some of that. The question is, can you grab a bite without sacrificing too much of what you have. That's where I think WOGL may be sitting for now. So even if Ben closed up shop tomorrow, if WOGL then fast forwarded into a more 80s centered playlist, would they do better than they are today, or would they be essentially where Ben is now?

Hey Bob. I am also a big fan of Ben-FM's music. You could be right about WOGL, but I think most people will listen to the station regardless of what they would play. They are a heritage station that has been serving the community for almost 30 years. I think a lot of people also listen for the vacation-a-day give away to the carribean. I could definitely be wrong, but I think they could drop 60s all together and play 4 70s, 6 80s and 2 90s and people would still listen. I guess we will have to see what the future holds for them lol.

Sometimes I wonder if WOGL could pull off a 101-esque brand change. Sure, the dropped the name "oldies" a while back, but otherwise still sounds pretty much like "Oldies 98." Not that I have an idea of what the right brand might be, but just wonder if it might be feasible sometimes. :)

NO need to change WOGL into a B101. Their ratings are great and at best they would only cut More FM's pie in half which would result in a significant loss of listeners for WOGL
