Enco automation. Works almost always.

The FCC licenses radio stations to "serve the public interest." Nowadays that pretty much means just playing the same few songs over and over which will appeal to a mass audience. A station with local hosts, local news, different genres of music, a community calendar, PSAs and "magazine" programs---now that is serving the public interest! And now we know what to call the years 2000 to 2009: The "oughts." I'm spreading the word about the new KBUU. Are bumper stickers on the way?

I like KCRW. The channel has Press Play, Which Way LA and Morning Becomes Eclectic. KPCC is still licensed to Pasadena Community College---hey, d'ya think that could be what the "PCC" stands for?---but since the station went on the air as KPCS (circa 1958), over the years there have been fewer and fewer local hosts and more and more network shows and syndicated shows, such as Morning Edition, Marketplace, Fresh Air, All Things Considered, Prairie Home Companion and two BBC News programs. KPCC is no longer located at the College...and do any students work at KPCC anymore? And how often does either station broadcast a PSA or mention a community event (unless it's an event the on-air host is appearing at)?

We now return you to your regularly scheduled KBUU discussion.

That much you should have known before you applied. LPFMs are shoehorned in and the "hammering" is what keeps them in the precise service area they apply to serve.

I wish you all the luck in the world. LPFMs tend to face an uphill battle for survival, either from a lack of community financial support or volunteers who eventually tire of the station and move on. Hopefully you will be able to sustain operations and provide service to the community for many years.

Of course we knew it. And we live with it.

KPFK is not available over the air here. KCRW poops out east of our service area. KPCC poops out WAY before that. And our local news is MALIBU news. Find this elsewhere on the dial:

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!!

Of course we knew that we have interference outside our area. Duh. If this was easy, someone would have done it.

KPFK, KCRW and KPCC do not cover our service area, western Malibu.

No one covers local news -- Malibu news -- like we do.

We do have window stickers. Email to [email protected] and get ready to send a SASE.

Amazing that positive news about radio seems to draw out negative reactions like this. Just amazing.

I read that KPFK has a translator for Malibu. But you're right, it's not their primary service area.

It's a great idea! Malibu is a unique community, and when disaster strikes, it'll be great to have a radio station that can provide information.

A lot of musicians live there...hopefully a few of them will volunteer to host shows. I have found it's always helpful to involve artists in community radio.

Of course we knew that we have interference outside our area. Duh. If this was easy, someone would have done it.

Then perhaps you should have chosen language that would not be interpretable as complaining. "Hammered" is a word, when used in the context of radio transmission, that has negative connotations.

Amazing that positive news about radio seems to draw out negative reactions like this. Just amazing.

How are you able to interpret "I wish you all the luck in the world" and "hopefully you will be able to sustain operations and provide service to the community" as negative?

Do yourself a favor and ask Michi Eyre-Bradley what I think of LPFM.

Congratulations on getting your LPFM on the air. I started the process with a group on Vashon Island 15 years ago and last year we built and put KVSH-lP on the air. 7 watts ERP on 101.9, no building penetration to speak of. Since it's on an Island most of the shoreline or water front residence don't get the station due to terrain shielding. It's available on the web at www.voiceofvashon.org. We started to webcast 15 years ago. I find it unique how we handle and put a spin on the music we play when running on the Automation. We use Station Playlist and found it to be great. We use the Voice tracker so Volunteers can voice track from home.

I wonder if the energy and funding for the NPR down link for KBUU-LP would not be better spent on developing local content. Not sure what point your trying to make about KBUU-LP fundraising skills of $620, serving an area of megga million dollar homes. Voice of Vashon operates on $75,000 a year plus money brought in for special projects. This money come from the Vashon Island community and grants.

How many donation coffee cups does KBUU-LP you have out in the community? Not trying to be negative but I think that statement makes it sound like it's someone's personal Juke box versus really engaging the community or writing a grant. For the 15 years Voice Of Vashon has been in existence the one thing they have down is fundraising in a small community and grant writing. Vashon islands population is 12-15K depending on the weather.

Not to pound the fundraising but VoV has real monthly expenses like studio rental space, telephone line/DSL, Comcast/ISP, Power and 4 paid staff (not alot of pay but they spend a little on staff), VoV has a backup generator at the studio (paid from by an angle donor). Our transmitter space is donated by our local water district which is hooked up to their backup generator. We have two ISP for redundancy for our webcast and general connectivity. There is a mono phone line backup to the transmitter so in an emergency VoV will stay on the air. Who pays for the Monthly ISP? That's got to cost more than $620 a year. If someone is putting in their personal money are the expecting ownership or a say in the programming or are the gifting this money no strings attached. LPFM "ownership" can be a slippery slope. What's the real monthly nut for KBUU-LP? Is this donated and if so what is it? Is there funding to sustain the station? From your opening post I would say no.

It's great Malibu has an LPFM but some of the stuff in the original post is scary, like the $620...Give Me a break (makes it sound like your not living in the real sustainable world). Rubber stamped programming like NPR, AAA and Beatles. Makes me want to say "Sad that Malibu does not have the talent to be original." Sorry to sound like an Ass hole but I'm an Ass hole that founded an LPFM and stuck with it for better or worse, for 15 years and I'm very proud of the people involved and how VoV has grown and developed what you hear on the webcast or on the LPFM. I can truly say that the community of Vashon owns Voice of Vashon. It's humbling to start something where so many great people other than myself have become involved and built a small community station that is very listenable with our unique spin on things.

Stay in house with your programming as much as possible, play on the Malibu connection. Educate listeners on how Malibu helped influence music and how your music connects with your community. If you want people to see your LPFM as real and unique then at least be real when it comes to money and how that goes to full filling KBUU-LP providing local coverage. VoV has over 15 volunteers that know how to do a shows and they all live on the Island. This took alot of Volunteer time and money to get the right tools (equipment/software/ISP/power/rent) so they can produce their shows.

There will be good times and there will be tough times. There will be good post and there will be negative ones and even ones like mine. It's almost like, perish the thought, "Real" Radio, but run by a bunch of Volunteers, at times very frustrating, but overall rewarding.

Ah, Kim, I see nothing has changed.

Thanks for the good wishes. Good luck with that consulting.

KBU covers an area that does not get NPR coverage. Our survey shows huge demand for NPR's ATC and ME. That's all we will air. We view it as essential public service.

The rest of the day will be "local voices" -- and they want to play AAA and the Beatles. And World Music. And jazz. And we have a terrific Americana show Wednesday nights. And we have trainees about to launch a surf music show. And a headbanger show. And electronica Saturday nights. All programmers live within 6 miles of the tower.

We will start training community programmers at the Malibu Boys and Girls Club and at the teen center at the Malibu Public Library this month. Five nights a week will be kids voicetracking from home. We will be able to review the shows before they air.

We have no paid staff and the monthly costs are nominal right now. Our ISP is $30 a month. We built a 3-hop private network STL for $500. One hundred percent reliability. We don't use th einternet much except to feed a 124k signal to our streaming service, which costs $10 a month. Music rights are $150 a month. Power is donated, no studio rental, no xmtr rental. No phone.

We will soon start fundraising, but it is not essential right now. The board of directors has funded the station startup. Only when we are complete, will we start fundraising.

We are damn proud to have moved $620 worth of ceramic coffee cups.

Downright scary? "BOO!"

"Power is donated, no studio rental, no xmtr rental. No phone." Now all I can hear is Roger Miller lamenting, "No phone, no pool, no pets---I ain't got no cigarettes."

K.M. I remember reading in the Glendale News-Press a year or two ago that the local Humane Society had applied for a permit to launch a community-oriented LPFM at 101.5. They were among several applicants. I never heard any more about the station. Did 101.5 ever get on the air?

Ah, Kim, I see nothing has changed.
Ah, now I know who you are.

Welcome back, zumahans. Try not to hold grudges from over a decade ago, if you would; the management doesn't take kindly to it.

I am sincere in my wishes for your LPFM to succeed. I think Malibu is an excellent place to have one.

K.M. I remember reading in the Glendale News-Press a year or two ago that the local Humane Society had applied for a permit to launch a community-oriented LPFM at 101.5. They were among several applicants. I never heard any more about the station. Did 101.5 ever get on the air?

That frequency is the largest home of mutually exclusive applications in the whole U.S. Working backwards from the list at Michi's site, the Humane Society application was dismissed at their request in January. If you want to see the status of that battle, it is MX Group #27 listed at RECNet's site: http://recnet.net/window1/ and if you want to see how the remaining applicants have banded together into three sets of proposed timesharing of that frequency they are the 10th, 11th and 12th graphs on this page at RECNet: http://recnet.net/timeshare.php

With that many applicants and three competing timeshare proposals filed, it will be some time before 101.5 gets on the air. Hans was lucky in that there were no competing applications for 97.5, and he also had the foresight to do a lot of advance planning and legwork when the FCC was still working on the original timetable for accepting applications so he was able to file very quickly when the opportunity arose.

So someone named "Zuma" is running a station in Malibu? Weird. K.M., thank you for the update regarding the 101.5 frequency. Do you remember the LPFM that broadcast from Tower Records on the Sunset Strip? It was very low-power. I don't think it covered much area outside of the parking lot!

So someone named "Zuma" is running a station in Malibu? Weird.

His name is Hans Laetz and he lives in the Zuma Beach area of Malibu. Hence his old username "zumahans".

That wasn't a LPFM, it was a Part 15 unlicensed wireless microphone-type device. Covering an area about the size of Tower's lot would have been about right to comply with the rules for operating such devices.

I remember listening to Tower Records' dinky lil' station many times while I sat in my dinky lil' car in their parking lot. I don't remember which frequency it broadcast on, though. Do those dinky lil' wireless stations require FCC approval or can anyone start one? And no, I'm not thinking of starting my own station---I'm just curious about what kind of equipment is involved and which frequencies are used for such stations.

That's "King of the Road" and I am still searching for a station that actually plays it. Some helpful information in it:

"two hours of pushin' broom buys an eight by twelve four-bit room"

Good to know.

These devices work on the principle of Ronco's MR. Microphone. Check Ebay for availability and you can be on the air as soon as tomorrow Steve!
