Astor Broadcasting is no more

It turns out "KIK" and "KOW" Country was just one final stunt. Art Astor has leased out his last two radio stations KSPA and KFSD to Guadalupe Radio, a Spanish Catholic group that still broadcasts on 87.7 FM. I am guessing this is standard 'lease with option to buy' agreement. Guadalupe Radio not only gets run of the stations, but the audio streams and mobile apps as well.

Highest and best use for 15~Ten. Did AA build out the 6kw Night CP? For years he begged and pleaded the FCC to give him better night time pow-pow-power, but they told him to wait for the 15~Hundred in Culver City case to be decided.

Here is an interesting story from the Orange County Register about Art Astor and his collection of 275 automobiles, including vehicles driven by Tom Mix and John Wayne, and more than 1000 radios, televisions, telephones, victrolas and slot machines. Apoparently radio stations were just one more thing for him to collect and now he's grown tired of them:

Steve: Art Astor was KHJ's sales manager close to 50 years ago (he moved on to GM at KDAY in '68). Figure he's within five years of 80. This isn't "growing tired" of his collectibles. They were investments. It's estate planning 101. He's in this phase now.

Well, I can answer my own question...and then ask another one. KSPA and KFSD are simulcasting the audio of KSFV-Channel 6, which is also heard on 87.75 fm. But KSFV has filed an application to become a full-power station and move to Channel 22. What will happen to the three radio stations then?

Simple, it winds up being a subchannel.

KSFV's application may not happen given the Great Repacking Uncertainty, but eventually they will have to go digital, and they will have to cut out the franken-FM business. The repacking has given franken-FMs a reprieve due to the FCC delaying the mandatory digital transition for remaining television stations (why build a digital facility now when you might have to move channels in a few years?).

I don't know how they can get full power on 22. Mexico may object if it's too close to XHUAA-TDT.

According to CDBS, they are a Class A digital LPTV and therefore must be protected in the repacking.

This is where it gets interesting. CDBS has four records for KSFV-CD:

1. Their channel 6 license, granted 7/28/2008 and expired 12/1/2014 (but still shown as current because they filed their renewal 8/4/2014 and it is still pending);
2. A CP to increase power to 3kw, granted 7/1/2009;
3. An application to move to channel 22, filed 5/18/2015 but not yet granted; and
4. A channel 22 license, issued 5/21/2013.

Are they operating on both channels?
