WRKO dropping Rush

I think we're seeing the answer to that question now. What we don't know is how Rush will respond. How important is the platform to him? Even a declining platform. Because the money probably doesn't matter, except for the ego. But there are other ways to feed the ego.

As I said, things are evolving...slowly. Radio stations are considering their options. A national talent like Rush is worth the money to a station if they can make even more with it. If they can't, then they go local, or carry someone with straight barter. It's interesting because there's a big movement among owners for more localized programming. You're not seeing a lot of new national talk shows any more. There's no reason.
 
The $64,000 ($640,000) question for Indianapolis, Boston and any other market that wants to replace Rush is with what local talent? Who's available, and how many hosts are you going to have to throw against the wall until one sticks?

well if the time Rush was over at AM 1200 "Rush Radio" is any indication, the answer to how many hosts is as many as you can line up and fire.

The revolving door would still be spinning at Guest Street except for the fact that CCM&E threw in the towel on their ill fated venture and WRKO gladly took RHL back.

WRKO was rudderless for a while there.... the time between Kuhner and Carr was a mess.

This time around I really think Kuhner goes to mid days where he will be embraced by the ditto heads and WRKO will have a stable lineup from 10 to 7. The unknown is AM drive, my prediction is something more news driven with Kim Carrigan and a cast of _________?

With almost every major market station playing the leased time infomercial additional revenue stream game on the weekends, and syndicated at night, there is no farm team to draw from. WRKO's fill in host list consists of Avi Nelson (who is not a young man) and the guy that was keeping Howie Carr's chair warm and I forget his name... made quite an impression with me huh. Mo Lauzier is gone.. McScreech was cut almost as soon as she was named Carr's designated fill in... Todd Feinberg is found more often at WBZ these days... I'm pretty sure Entercom has cut him loose. Cripes WBZ AM has a deeper bench to call talent up from than WRKO at this point now that I think of it.

It isn't like grabbing someone from Providence is an option anymore... they have exhausted that roster.

People were throwing VB's name around, maybe as morning co-host and hey Doug Goudie got used to doing mornings at 25; "he wants to do TV again for some reason", Howie has said of VB on air, but he welcomed him back and he's there a couple times a week for comic effect (free Kowloon food on Tue.) Howie's co-producer is Steve Robinson out of Maine, and there's Nancy "Sandy" Shack (actually married but didn't catch her husband's surname). Herald Radio has likes of Joe Battenfeld and various writers. Graham's former prod. Great and Powerful Tom Shattuck works for BHR too.

Nancy's husband is a member of one of my FB groups (not the radio one 6500+ strong!!) he seems like a nice guy and contributes to the conversations...

If Doug was going to get a TV gig in this market, it would have happened by now. No station in this market has a person doing what he did (and maybe there is a reason for that). Doug Meehan ended up in Arizona as an anchor and IMHO "VB" does not have what it takes to be an anchor or a good general assignment reporter. Entercom could have made him an offer to replace Howie...maybe they did, but either way he isn't at WRKO already.

And how hard would that be? I'm sure Barry isn't paying huge money for 2 hours a day. Anything WRKO was offering had to be better than what Barry was offering.

She might already be on payroll at Entercom while this comes together. I'm sure the Nilosec problem set everything back, and now with Rush getting the bums rush everything is up in the air. It is just a question of finding out if she is in AM drive or Howies lead in. I don't see her as a replacement for Rush or as Howies lead in, I do see her as a viable AM drive host in a news/current event driven show.

But back to compensation, I'm sure she is never going to get the money she was getting from either of her TV gigs doing radio.

"We're in no rush to add Rush, Scott. Certainly not on WATD-FM where our 65 golden weekday hours are always programmed locally. And once we get Brockton [1460] back on the air I expect to follow the same protocol there. "
