R.I.P. CKOC music

Wow! That's highly unfortunate. I rather enjoyed listening to them from time to time.

I'm not sure of your age, but I'm in my early 40's and didn't mind having CKOC as a listening choice from time to time. A lot better than all comedy 820.
FYI, 820 brings in a 1.0 share. CKOC brought in a respectable 5.0 share, so who knows what Bell is thinking...

I'm in my early 30's. I'm not actually in Hamilton, I'm in Michigan, and CKOC throws a very narrow lobe my way at night (right around the Michigan / Indiana / Ohio state line), so I can pick it up with some regularity. I've been known to listen online from time to time, too. CHAM is sometimes there, but not as reliably, so I can't really attest to their programming.

It sounds like Bell's intent is to simply put sports on the stronger signal. It's too bad Bell doesn't see that there is more demand for music than there is for comedy radio. 820 would have been a good home for oldies/classic hits.

Perhaps they flipped away from music so they would no longer pay music royalties.

Is it very expensive for a radio station to play music in Canada?

Perhaps Ontario oldies fans should call and write Bell and try to convince them to do "CHUM 820".

One scary thought - CKWW 580 is also Oldies and also is Bell, and they're pulling less than 1.0. Will they be flipping to sports soon?

Don't give them any ideas.

I enjoyed listening to Ted Yates and Rockin' Ray Michaels in the last several years. Once they were terminated, seems like the rest of the staff was just pulled from elsewhere in the chain/building, correct?

That would be true enough, with CKOC mornings and Funny 820 having the same person doing the morning thing... (perhaps with Funny 820 mostly or all on Voice track mode)

As for CKWW, it would seem the focus is to have at least one major sport to carry first before an AM of Bell's goes sports.
If CHML were to lock in a continued Ti cat deal, I highly doubt CKOC would have bothered with a sports direction at all.
The truth is, CKOC stole Ti Cats from CHML.

How big of a loss that is for CHML is debatable...820 tried to go all talk once to compete head on with CHML and they fell flat on their face with crazy low ratings.
Therefore, one can conclude that CHML is doing quite well with their talk programming alone even if they have no sport to cover.

As for Music royalties in Canada, this is from 2010, but still a good read: http://exclaim.ca/Music/article/Rad...alties_After_Copyright_Board_of_Canada_Ruling
