Charles In Charge of KNX

I'm jealous! Frankberry came up with a headline that sounds like one I would write. :)

Andy Ludlum was fired on September 24, 2014, and temporarily replaced by news director Julie Chin. I don't mean to disparage Chin's work and dedication...but why did it take CBS more than eight months to find a permanent replacement?

Have you tried hiring someone lately? The legal paperwork alone takes months. The government wants you to make sure you're considered all "qualified" applicants. I've noticed a lot of places where it's taken almost a year to get someone replaced.

Some of us here have discussed the possibility of KNX moving to FM or adding an FM simulcast but I doubt CBS will ever make such a move, even though FM news stations seem to do fairly well in other cities such as Phoenix and San Francisco. On May 12, Cumulus launched Newsradio 106.7 WYAY in Atlanta. The station's website is at http://www.newsradio1067.com but it can also be accessed via allnews1067.com...and in April, Cumulus registered the domain name allnews955. KLOS is trying to shed its "dinosaur" image. They've dropped most of the 1960s rock and begun playing Nirvana, Whitesnake, Skid Row, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Black Sabbath, Collective Soul and the Foo Fighters. But if the ratings do not improve, would Cumulus make KLOS an all-news station? Could Ken Charles have some competition?

You mentioned WYAY, and if you look at the ratings for that station, you have your answer. The only FM where Cumulus has had success with news/talk is WMAL in DC. The FM simulcast has really resurrected what had become a dead radio station. Then again, that's exactly what they have with KABC. But music is so much cheaper and usually makes much more money. They only have one FM in LA, so unless that changes, I doubt they'll blow it up for news. That's not to say they won't blow it up for something else, which they may.

I made a mistake. "You, Steve?" Okay, okay, no need to be sarcastic. WYAY became "All News 106.7" in 2012 and, after adding some talk programs such as John Batchelor and Redeye Radio, rebranded as Newsradio 106.7 in May of 2014. Cumulus registered the newsradio955 domain name in 2012. Apparently Cumulus was considering a news format for KLOS back then. By the way, Mister tuna, today KLOS played Black Betty by Ram Jam! For a brief moment, I thought Ten-Q had returned! :D

Cumulus wouldn't make it to lunchtime competing against Ken Charles. I've had the pleasure of working with him. Expect great things.

And last year, WYAY became a News/Talk station, and is no longer all news.

Greetings, KNX fans! There is no LARadio.com column today so, for your amazement and amusement, here is today's Rewind:

LARadio Rewind: June 23, 1996. Fred Anderson dies of a heart attack one week after undergoing triple bypass surgery at Glendale Memorial Hospital following an earlier heart attack. He was 59. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, Anderson studied music theory at the New England Conservatory of Music. He worked in radio in Worcester, Boston, Roanoke and New Orleans before coming to Los Angeles in 1960. He briefly worked at 97.1 fm KFMU, a classical station broadcasting from Farmers Market at 3rd and Fairfax. He also worked for KRHM, KGBS, ABC Radio and CBS Radio. In 1963, he became a news reporter and editor at KNX. In 1968, WABC/tv in New York launched a daily Eyewitness News program which relied on action footage instead of simply having a newsman read stories while sitting behind a desk. Sister station KABC-Channel 7 followed suit in February 1969 and Anderson joined the local Eyewitness News team. He would stay at KABC/tv for more than 25 years. In addition to his news reporting, he produced more than 500 Anderson At Large segments documenting his work at a different job each day, including gardening, painting, teaching, cooking, piloting and fishing. Anderson won a Golden Mike award for his feature reporting and an Emmy award for a documentary on abused children.

I still think you should have a blog to post these in, Steve, especially since your recent revelation that Don won't let you include anything farther back than the 1980s.
