Ratings: KRTH Ties for 1st, KTWV Again Top 5

In the May ratings, CBS Classic Hits KRTH tied iHeart Hot AC KBIG for the top spot, with iHeart Top 40 KIIS just a tenth behind them. In 4th place is iHeart AC KOST, with CBS Rhythmic AC KTWV just a tenth behind Coast. That's quite a boost for KTWV, which some were wondering a few months ago would survive as The Wave. Or maybe become the latest CBS-owned FM Sports station.

In the Urban/Rhythmic battle, KRRL was up slightly to #11 and Power 106 was up a bit, tied for #13.

The only Spanish-language station to crack the top 10 was Latin AC KLVE. The only AM station and the only Talk station in the top 10 is KFI, at #9.

The story about The Wave is it's successfully reinvented itself in another format and still retained it's heritage name. That's not an easy thing to do. It was a slow, gradual move, but patience has prevailed. Sort of a similar move, although not as drastic, for KRTH. The bottom line for both is huge ratings. Cumulus should study CBS if they have any hope of resurrecting KLOS.

All the more impressive is that the former geezer domain of KRTH is now a strong 25-54 player.

And it would appear KSWD's signing Mark Thompson and KRRL taking Big Boy from Power paid off nicely as well.

In 18-49, the core for the format, Big Boy has a 3.4 now and he had a 4.9 average in the last 3 books of 2014 on Power. He is underperforming the other dayparts on KRRL.

This just points out the role of the program director: under the skilled direction of Jimmy and Rick at Emmis, Big Boy was as high as #1 in 18-49 (Sept, 2014) and generally in the top 3 positions. Now he is 10th.

But Dave Beasing's masterful move of putting Mark on mornings parlayed an average 10th position in that daypart into a solid 5th in 25-54. Again, good programmers get results.

I'm concerned about what I'm seeing at Power....they seem to be going after ethnic niches rather than mainstream. Not the way I'd go.

Power has cumed about 55% or so Hispanic for the last two decades. Since LA is over 55% Hispanic in 18-34 and half Hispanic in 18-49, that would seem to be the best way to reach that demo. If they shift a bit away from the smallish Black community they can likely make up for it with non-Hispanic whites... the challenge is rebuilding a morning show.

I just won a bet with myself that the first post after two closed K EARTH threads would still be about K EARTH.

Now I have to have that beer I owe myself.

Judging by what I see in their music and social media, they seem to be aiming in the other direction for some reason.

The music is ultra-Hispanic today.

OK, then it's changed from last month.

It's been totally Hispanic focused since Big Boy left... very high researching songs among Hispanics, some of which don't do as well with Blacks. Of course, being mostly hip hop, the artists are predominantly African American.

With all the talk of how New York is a city that embraces newsradio and LA doesn't due to the multitude of ethnicities here, I see that WCBS and KNX have the exact same 6+ rating. But how do the two stations differ in 25-54 and revenue?

WCBS... around 17th in 25-54, billings of just under $50 million. KNX... around 25th in 25-54 and billings of $30 million.

WCBS: power ratio of nearly 1.9. KNX: ratio of 1.3.

It's nice to see KPWR finally recover, so one can expect Power 106 to rebuild now that KRRL has cooled down. At the same time you have to wonder if Real 92.3 is helping or hurting KIIS ratings wise since the February flip cause the results seem to be mixed.

For those interested here is the link to the non-demographically tweaked listing reported above:

KABC is tied with KLAA and KFWB for "third from the bottom" honors - how far indeed have the once great fallen!

Getting back to David's listing of the 25-54 demos, I find it a bit sad that KFI has sunk to #20. At one time KFI was one of the nation's outstanding Talk stations, scoring in the top 10 in the 25-54 demo. They have tried to create a Talk station that sounds hip and contemporary. Is it being on AM that has caused their decline? Is it that nobody under 50 listens to Talk, whether its on AM or FM?

David tells us KNX only ranks #25 in the 25-54 demo. Doesn't anyone under 50 need to know the weather or traffic or how the Dodgers are doing or what's in the news? And don't say the under 50 crowd gets their news from personal devices. They can get their music from personal devices too. Why isn't that hurting the 19 music stations that rank higher than KFI in the 25-54 demo?

Also, note that KROQ is only at #11. I suppose if you just isolated Men 25-54, it would score better. And since it plays few titles from before 2000, it aims at men 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. But would have thought fellow CBS stations K-Earth and The Wave would be scoring higher than K-Rock in the 25-54 demo?

KBIG and KOST are #1 and #4 respectively in the 25-54 race. I can remember when they were both Soft AC stations with nearly identical playlists and similar sounding formats and personalities. DJs never talked over the intros. Four songs in a row between commercial sets, with rarely a word spoken between the songs. KOST was usually the leader, and used Dick Clark in its TV spots. But KBIG was close behind. If you go back further, to the 70s, both stations were Easy Listening, again almost indistinguishable. Now KBIG plays almost nothing from before 2000, yet is the top station 25-54.

David is right about KPWR's shift towards a Hispanic base, and its playlist is starting to reflect that, which is a smart move on their part.
