Long Time No Hear, How has Houston Been?

It's been a while since I've been on here, hope everybody is doing well. It's been a little bit quiet around here, so what has been going on?

Any thoughts about the recent June ratings? How about what KHMX is going to do next, now that Atom Smasher's morning show has been "smashed" off of the schedule?

How about the Country, Urban, or Top 40 wars? I know KKHH must be on top of the world in that battle right now, is KRBE now a shell of its former self, or do they still have a little bit of potential left?

How about KQBT, now that most of the schedule is now live and local, (kinda surprising for a new iHeartradio Urban to me, but still great)? How have they been against KBXX & KMJQ (I ask because Majic has dropped a bit in the general June PPM's, I'm thinking the retooled night show on The Beat may have something to do with it)?

What about Boom? How have they been in their target demo?

Welcome back mr. ric. I'm just a casual listener but here's my take:


KHMX is an interesting station--I'm not sure of to whom it appeals. I have pretty eclectic tastes when it comes to rock, pop, AC, 80s, 90s, etc., and Mix doesn't appeal to me one bit. It seems like a lost soul. They did a 90s weekend over July 4th holiday and I thought it sounded fresh, almost like a Jack format. I am surprised CBS hasn't done some sort of variety station that is musically in between Sunny & Hot. It would help them finish taking down KRBE and probably put a dent in Sunny.

On the top 40 war, KRBE sounds stale with too many recurrent songs. Hot sounds fresher by playing more current songs and has a more energetic presentation/imaging.

I haven't been listening to country lately and I'm not an urban listener.
 
Well, Houston has been through a Memorial Day flood, a tropical storm that really wasn't much, and downtown continues to resemble Beijing, China with all of the construction ongoing. I swear, there must be over 20 cranes dotting the skyline. Have you seen the old Central Bank Building? You know, the one with an ancient digital clock on top? Man, it's really coming together after 30 years of neglect. Then there's the Savoy, looking good in its fresh coat of Holiday Inn paint, the Carter building (a newly renovated J.W. Marriott), and oh btw, TXDOT is going to tear the Pierce Elevated down and move Gulf Freeway's traffic to the East Freeway.

It's a great time for Houston, Mr. Ric.

As for Houston radio, and I'm reckoning you noticed this too, a full share drop at Majic. KQBT has removed 97-9 from the perch it was on for so long, and Boom!...well, it's cheaper to run than all news. Welcome back, ric. You haven't really missed much.

Not to be too flippant, but if you don't get Mix then it's probably working. To my ear, it's aimed at a 30-something woman. It's a flanker of Hot going after the upper demos that KRBE is trying to attract.
 
Thanks to all for the warm welcome backs! I also heard about the unfortunate layoffs nationwide at CBS Radio. Think the cuts may affect the Houston cluster as well?
