Louisville Ratings (5/18/15)

Here are the latest ratings. Somehow 100.5 MY FM went up to 1.6. WQMF had a pretty good jump and WSFR dropped a bit.
http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb055

Remember though that 100.5 had a 1.6 for winter phase 1 and phase 2... before collapsing to 1.3 for the quarter overall.

I think the most interesting thing in these numbers is WAMZ. Coyote Calhoun and Mel both left during the winter quarter, and now they have a 6.1 share. Even if those are just P1 numbers that will bounce around, I don't recall ever seeing numbers that low for WAMZ. I wish that Alpha subscribed to these Arbitrends, then we could see where WGZB is relative to WRKA... based upon typical WGZB numbers, it looks like it is possible that they are doing better than WAMZ. Of course, WQNU isn't doing so well either.

The P2 ratings came out today. This one surprised me: WVEZ is down to a 3.5, and QMF is up to a 3.7. I don't ever recall any time (at least not in recent history) that WVEZ has been so low (especially lower than WQMF), but of course, these are numbers that fluctuate and don't tell the whole story.

WTFX, WLGX, WKJK, and WKRD are all still at their usual 2.0 and below. Of course no Alpha stations again in this one, but they should be in the next one and that should give an idea as to how WGHL is doing. I have a feeling that a lot of the initial buzz about Old School 105.1 has died down and their playlist is starting to wear very thin on listeners.

You are totally wrong about WGHL.

Do we have idea what kind of ratings WHBE AM/FM and WLCL are getting? I know they don't subscribe so is there any other way to find out how they are doing compared to WKRD and WXVW?

Correct. Phase II trends consist of a 4 weeks from Winter and 8 weeks from Spring. Because they combine samples from two separate surveys, they are not weighted and can vary considerably when March is dropped and the April-May-June data is weighted for true proportionality.

I wouldn't be totally surprised if I was wrong. I know nothing beyond what is publishable. I'm just basing it mostly on how there was this huge buzz about 105.1 when they first started, but lately I'm hearing a lot less (really nothing) about them. It also seems like every time I turn it on, I hear the same small batch of songs on there. I've barely listened to them, but any time I turn it on, it is one of the same couple dozen songs. It just feel more like a novelty than a lasting thing, and even if they are still doing well (which, keeping things in perspective, I'm sure they're still doing better than any format at 105.1 in the past 7 or 8 years and will stay there for at least a little while longer), it seems like something that will come crashing down at some point.

Look to the north. 93.9 The Beat Indianapolis 1st to 8th in 4 months.

93.9 The Beat has been Top 3 in P 25-54 since it's launch.. that's all that matters

I'm cheering for The Beat with this one. Same for Old School at Alpha Louisville. Dale Schaefer is one of the best GM's I worked for. But with the ongoing erosion overall, experience brings into question whether Beat can maintain those top 3 25-54 numbers for much longer. More importantly, as you well know "all that matters" isn't really the Nielsen numbers, but how well the sellers at Cumulus Indianapolis can convert those numbers to dollars. Unless you're on the inside and can share specifics to the contrary, I think we can agree that Beat isn't likely anywhere near the top 3 in sales in the market, nor will it ever be. Conversely, whatever dollars Beat (or Old School) finds has to be an improvement over the past. That in itself is truly "all that matters." Word out.

So now the end of the quarter numbers are in:

http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb055

Lite 106.9 took quite a tumble, but I doubt it is something that will last. 102.3 seems to be falling a bit too. And of course, 100.5 is still a failure, but they're not quite failing as much as they did the previous quarter.

I am surprised by WGHL, still improving, tied with WMJM now (bringing down their numbers slightly, but not by much). But they're not hurting WGZB at all, which is at #2. I'm still not convinced it will last though.

I hate to say I told you so...

There is nothing to hate or not about it, I'm just surprised. I still don't think it is going to be a lasting thing, those numbers are decent and a lot better than anything at 105.1, well, ever... but a lot of formats have done that well (or better) only to come tumbling down within a few months. It looks like WGHL is eating away at their own sister station WMJM, which is not good for Alpha either way. I can't see them both staying about where they are, one of them will eventually eat the other, but I think WMJM is going to be the one that wins out in the end... maybe with adding some of the old school hip hop to their programming.

Funny you mentioned that. Surprisingly, 101.3 is still adding classic hip hop songs. Maybe the loss of Tom Joyner hurt them.

How about WHAS dropping to third place? You don't see that very often.WHAS dropped a lot and WGZB has a pretty good lead on them now.
I was also surprised to see WHBE 680 in the ratings.I guess 93.9 didn't register anything.I think that UB is wasting 93.9 by not putting any of 680's local shows on there. With WLCL 93.9's strong signal and local shows I believe they would do better than 680's rating of 0.8.
And last but not least I guess we're stuck with 100.5 MY-FM since their ratings have gone up.They wouldn't change formats with a 1.3 so with a 1.7 their crappy format will probably stay.

I wouldn't say that we're stuck with My FM. They're still at the very bottom of the rated FMs, which is bad no matter how you look at it.

680 is about to pass 790 in the ratings as the top sports station in town. I agree they seem to be wasting 93.9 and should drop the all UL branding and go all local with a mix of UK/UL sports as something like all sports 93.9 or 93.9 the team. I would think they would be able to double 680's 0.8 rating on a strong signal like 93.9. Any thoughts?

93.9 has a partnership with UofL. UofL probably doesn't want to be partnered with a low power AM station like 680.
