Maybe it's my bias as an ex-jock but I'm getting very bored by this radio station. Without some personality jocks it's like listening to an mp3 player except my mp3 player doesn't have those annoying micro dropouts. It's been two weeks into this new format. As Peggy Lee asked, "Is that all there is?"

Even more annoying than the micro dropouts is the intrusion of an amateurishly voiced "WX (pause) CT (pause) Southington" in the middle of the third song of most hours. Why do the legal ID then and not at :00, and why in the world would you fade a song down in the middle just to do so?

The "wow" factor is fading as well. Someone seems to be pruning the playlist to a safe and familiar few hundred from the huge variety of the first week, probably in preparation for gong live as a typical "good times and great oldies" format.

Out in the car this morning and tuned to 990. Silence. The carrier's there but no audio. At 9am the top of the hour station ID comes on loud and clear then back to silence. A few minutes later I begin to hear music but very low.

That's an ID from former WXCT operator Charlie Profit. It's been playing automatically over programming once an hour since 2007. I mentioned it to Ray Weber on Facebook and he said he'd check it out.

Fred King is on the twin stations as of sometime this morning, sounds good to hear him again. (I'm from the Springfield area originally and listened to him on WHYN and WARE) I imagine he is broadcasting from WACM in W Springfield. He is also presenting news covering both broadcast areas and weather. Hope this means the format is as permanent as a format can be these days.

Charlie's Legal has officially been retired!

Fred King is indeed a DJ and everything is running out of WACM in West Springfield.

Yeah. When I made the post stating he might be involved with the station it was after my Mom heard him hosting a test airshift on a Wednesday afternoon. Then we didn't hear him on again that's why I said "might be involved". He started doing mornings about 3 weeks ago.

Besides WHYN in Springfield and WARE is Ware, has Mr. King done any radio in Hartford in the past?

Technically the station sounds a lot better. I'm listening to WXCT 990 and it sounds like they've goosed up their audio with some good compression. The station also sounds louder. Are they doing 125% modulation on the positive peaks?

Programatically I think it sounds very dull. The station needs more personality to liven up the pace and flow. They let the songs fade too far before beginning the next one to the point it's almost dead air between them. The audience may like the non-stop, no personality format at first but without high-energy and humorous jocks I think the format will wilt away. Just my personal preference, but I think Fred King in the morning is a bit too bland.

I would stop the constant identification of the two separate stations. Brand it as a single product; "New England Oldies" or some such. Use the individual ID's only at the top of the hour.

I know who runs it and sorry they already have plans for shifts... You know I can't tell anyone how to contact anyone for a job.

And for anyone who was wondering why they were down for 6 hours yesterday the storms took down trees and wires on Meriden Avenue. 1500 Eversource Customers lost power and most of Southington lost their internet, phone, and cable from COX. With COX internet down 990 lost their feed from the West Springfield studios. I think Verizon Wireless was affected too as my Mom had no bars on her cell phone for most of yesterday.

Well they have a lot more things to do their only one month old.

Will the Southington studio ever be used? Will Southington-area advertising ever be solicited or aired? After all, this is the area that was impacted most by the ownership change at WDRC-FM. It seems strange that it's barely mentioned, other than in IDs, on this station, and all the ads are for Springfield-area businesses that people here will never patronize.

The Southington studio will not be used but there will be ads for the Hartford-Southington area.
