Rumors and facts: CBSFM and PLJ

And "down the shore" Press Communications Thunder Country 106 & Fun 107 (hot ac) are similar as far as advertising sold on both stations and proximity on the dial. I was involved in a conversation with a few males in their 20s, 30s regarding what they listen to on the terrestrial radio, generally Thunder was their choice but they also sample Fun for current pop. Country is doing well with both genders in the suburbs

Would it make any sense for Cumulus to flip WPLJ and Nash? Would Nash's ratings improve on 95.5 and would PLJ lose that much on 94.7?

Would Nash's ratings improve on 95.5 ?
yes

would PLJ lose that much on 94.7 ?
would cost them some but when youre already in the low 2s how much lower can you go

It's not about ratings. It's about revenues. I believe the revenues for a country station in NYC are not potentially better than a Hot AC. So they might get higher ratings, but the cluster would make less money. Right now they can sell the two as a package, and the individual ratings don't matter.

What works in NYC that isn't already there on multiple outlets, i.e. hip-hop, rhythmic CHR, hot AC (heavy on rhythmic), Spanish/tropical, classic hits, classic rock, sports? We've already determined that oldies, soft AC and smooth jazz would be unacceptable to youth-obsessed Madison Avenue, and that country and current-based rock are poor fits for the city's demographics now and going forward. Seems to me there is no viable format to flip to, just keep tweaking what you've got.

You're forgetting Urban AC. WBLS has consistently been in the top 3 of the ratings, and they have no competition. Cumulus already has an Urban AC format on WNBM 103.9, which is too small to even register in the ratings. How about moving the Urban AC format to 95.5 and going head to head with a top 3 station? Seems like an easy decision to me.

It's all about revenue. When Kiss was a competitor to WBLS, it had pretty good ratings, but billing wasn't all that great. Urban AC may get better ratings, but WPLJ as is bills more than a 2nd Urban AC.

In the newly released Morristown, NJ PPM's WPLJ has more than doubled its overall market share from 3.0 last Autumn, to a current 6.5. They are now #1 in that area, displacing sister station Nash FM.
As WPLJ has traditionally had strong appeal in NJ, this seems to be an indication that tweaking their programming rather than a major format change was the correct move to make.

So, what do those other PPM ratings reflect? the entire area as a whole?

how can they be a 2.2 in one and a 6.5 in the other?

I'd still like to know how the morning show is doing over all..

If you break any subset out of a book, you may see similar results. That means breaking out individual counties or groups of counties (such as Nassau-Suffolk) or even groups of ZIP codes. This can be caused by differences in the ethnic mix in a county, or by differences in socioeconomic levels or lifestyles or even by station coverage differences.

congrats to scott on an extension. I was a bit worried with all these layoffs... usually expensive shows are gone.

hopefully followed soon by todd pettengills last show this december..
