KRTH playing 2004 music!

Both great articles....How long was KRTH owned by RKO, prior to Beasley in 1989? I consider the RKO days to be some of the greatest for this station. Sounds like KRTH really struggled in 1999 according to the second article you provided. And it wasn't until '05 when Kaye took over that changes were finally made, or did KRTH tackle the ratings issue with changes in 2000-2004 under Coffey?

Ray Randolph's 93/KHJ Boss Radio tribute site includes a list of all the Hitbound songs which never made it to the Top 30. You'll be amazed at some of the non-charting songs, especially Barbara Ann by the Beach Boys, Let's Spend The Night Together by the Rolling Stones and Our House by Crosby Stills Nash & Young. Golly gee!

Back to the hitbounds that never made the Top 30 on KHJ, also surprised to see:

It was acquired as KHJ-FM, along with AM 930 and TV 9, from Thomas S. Lee around 1953 (at least, that's when the Broadcasting Yearbook started showing them as the owners), but they were known as General Teleradio then.

So ... a little over 35 years.

Counting the years on 44.5mc before FM moved to its current band, KRTH has been on the air just shy of 75 years total, and is the oldest continuously-operated FM station (as in ... it's operated on a regular schedule since August 11, 1941) in Los Angeles.

Never knew KRTH was automated around 1984. I do remember hearing jocks back then during their specials, but, I was not a KRTH listener prior to 1984. XTRA & KIIS were on my "presets" prior to that I believe.
K-EARTH still had Jocks during their 80s 'automated' days including live mornings and afternoons if I recall correctly? Dean Goss & Mr. Rock n' Roll© come to mind.

Some notable songs added to the KRTH rotation lately:

"Shining Star" (Manhattans), 7:24pm 7/27
"All My Love" (Led Zeppelin), 8:11pm 7/28
"Ben" (Michael Jackson), 7:37pm 7/30
"Coming Up" (Paul McCartney), 6:05am 7/31

Many stations use a process whereby songs that are marginal on a music test are slowly moved in and out of rotation. For example, a group of 200 of such songs might have 40 songs in play at any one time, with 160 resting and 10 to 12 of them changing out each week. This process is done automatically by the music scheduling software.

So it is likely that those songs were not "added" but just in a rest/play rotating category.

Robert Plant wrote All My Love for his son Karac, who had died of a stomach infection at age five while Led Zeppelin was on a North American tour. (Eric Clapton wrote Tears In Heaven after Clapton's four-year-old son Conor fell out a window and died.) All My Love was included on the In Through The Out Door album and was released as a single in South America but not in the United States. Is this the beginning of a trend? Will KRTH be adding more songs which were album tracks only?

Mister oldies76, I just checked KRTH's airplay for the first time in several weeks. One particular song has already been played three times today in a twelve-hour span: at 12:51 am, 6:21 am and 12:30 pm. I refuse to resurrect the complaints of a few months ago but I know I don't need to tell you which song that was. Yesterday it was played at 1:38 am, 7:20 am, 2:24 pm and 8:01 pm, making seven times in 36 hours. With the continued mind-numbing repetition, KRTH is not "such a lovely place," if you get my meaning.

And I quit listening to KRTH many months ago because of the mind-numbing repetition. Obviously it hasn't changed.

Another album track which KRTH plays fairly regularly is Stevie Wonder's Isn't She Lovely, which Stevie wrote for his new daughter Aisha. However, KRTH always plays the edited version which omits the sounds of a childbirth and the sounds of Stevie playing with Aisha.

I've noticed that songs are not being played quite as many times as before. Instead of five times in 24 hours, it appears to be about three times for some titles. So maybe the burn-out factor has kicked in, thus the reductions. Either way, it's still too much....but, it's a slight improvement over last couple years, with the K-Eagles and "Hotel..." debacles in the past now.

People don't listen for 36 hours.

I actually did when they did their marathon specials years ago. It was tiring, but worth every penny! And I bet I wasn't the only one in the 80's who did this.

Got it, cool...thanks for the info.

One the greatest songs ever produced!! Glad KRTH plays it. I don't believe anyone plays that long-version with the baby sounds. An edited version, which fades out on a CD single I bought online, is even shorter than KRTH's by about 30 seconds. Where can one pick up the cold-ending version KRTH plays?? I cannot find it anywhere.

And we no longer care, Steve. Stop flogging that dead horse. Enough is enough.

No, the music rotation philosophy hasn't changed, but one thing has: The ratings have improved since you left.
