KEARTH 101 (it's only 80's if we say so)

This post is a great argument for the censorship. Please, focus on radio and not de-constructing one sentence posts.

Sorry, Flipper, but you accused me of censorship so many times in the past that I just had to clarify what the word really means. I won't mention it again if you won't.

This is a good example of an 80's song not played on KRTH. The reason it doesn't test well. That is

The Motels "suddenly, last summer"

Big top 10 hit in late 1983, and im assuming during that time frame when KRTH was playing currents, it was popular then and it was popular on KOST as well. It probably is not popular now, seeing how KEARTH doesn't play it.

And you know this how?

I've been paying close attention to KRTH in recent months, and they have been moving songs on and off the active playlist like crazy. I've seen songs come into rotation, play once or twice a week for a month or two, and move back off to rest again.

Do you know -- for an absolute fact -- that KRTH hasn't played it at any time this year?

Im 99 percent certain it hasn't, i check the playlist religiously, and i havent seen or heard it. But I'll give u a 1 percent chance im wrong.

If im wrong im wrong.

On the other hand, I know for a fact that it played in the 7 PM to Midnight shift on KRTH on Sunday, August 9. That's just two days ago.

I just checked the playlist from krth sunday night.

See here.

That means it was on rewind with Gary Bryan, which is a syndication show And was not on the regular rotation with KRTH.

"Suddenly, Last Summer" is a great song by the very underrated Motels. Martha Davis was an amazing vocalist and the song is very well crafted. Given those strengths, I guess it should not come as a surprise that it doesn't test well.

It does on my wanna-be Ipod.

Some of us use the actual industry tracker BDS before we make definitive statements. The playlist posted at KRTH's website can have inaccuracies the BDS list does not.

Personally, I like the song, but as we all know by now, a programmer's opinion all by itself does not necessarily mean a song gets played these days.

Unless something changed in the last 24 hours, Gary is KRTH's morning guy. So for LA listeners, this is a KRTH show. And if a song plays on KRTH, then KRTH played it (sounds redundant, but think about it from a perception perspective).

If anything "Only the Lonely" should be the one airing. But yes, "Suddenly Last Summer" is worthy of airplay too. Both are great songs!

Oh, I don't know. Both great songs, both great vocal, both hit #9 on those old Billboard charts that don't mean anything anymore.

I would have thought "Only the Lonely" was the bigger hit, but like Casey used to say, it ain't number one until Billboard says it's number one...

I am sure some enterprising programmer with taste could actually find room to rotate both tracks in a 1000+ rotation filled with other tasty tracks as well... but, ahh, there I go again.

We don't program for ourselves, so our taste doesn't matter.

Well, there are some PD's that program for all and those are the ones that generally have the better playlists...and are darn good at it. They please their audiences and they please themselves with the satisfaction of knowing their audiences enjoy their presentations and selections based on listener feedback. Some of these stations have been around for many years.

I heard an old tape the other day and I couldn't believe how many of those 70's songs are not heard anymore. Genuine hits, just like those two Motels songs.

70s songs now are 40 years old. Like playing Al Jolson in the 70s. I'm sure there were some stations that played Jolson and Fletcher Henderson and that sort of thing in the 70s, but they weren't getting ratings. Even the beautiful music stations, aiming at people who grew up on Jolson, were playing orchestrated versions of Simon & Garfunkel.
