Glynn Walden (Mr IBOC) retires

"Glynn Walden retires as Senior VP/Engineering at CBS Radio.

He’s 71 and had “a tremendous 34-year run with Westinghouse, Group W. USA Digital Radio, iBiquity, Infinity and CBS.” That’s from his goodbye memo. He’ll continue to consult for CBS, whose stations he knows so intimately. While Radio World says Glynn has “voiced an interest in other special industry projects.” Walden was a key player in the development of America’s In-Band, On-Channel digital radio technology that came to be embodied in iBiquity."

Well maybe now that he's gone WBZ 1030 will finally shut off the noise maker.

WBZ: "Glynn, can you get over here some time this week or maybe next week, that damn IBOC thing is out of commission again. No, no one's called, it's only been off for a few days this time.....er why are we supposed to keep it on again??"

WBAP used to be a semi regular here in Ma years ago.

Try them again - WBAP shut down their IBOC a long time ago. So did WOAI, which was so strong in Florida they ought to do well in New England. If the frequencies aren't covered up by new stations.

In most parts of central and south FL, 1200 at night is dominated by the 100 kw Venezuelan from Caracas. And in the Ft Myers area, there is a local fulltime station on 1200.

Similarly, with New England being outside the protected zone for WOAI, there is now a Boston station on 1200.

That station was originally at 1190, but moved to 1200 in 1985, around the time the FCC basically ruined the hobby of DX-ing. Also around the time the FCC changed from a regulatory to a for-profit agency.

There's also a 50 kw on 830 a few miles from me, and too many stations on 820 between TX and me so I don't think I'll be logging that one any time soon again. I was never able to log WOAI.

Yes they certainly did, I wish I had the stuff I have now back then.

You think the FCC cares about DXing AM?? NO....its about local service........In the early days the clears (Class I-A) were given such to cover a LARGE part of then rural America.....that was their ONLY access to news, music, etc..NOW, that is no longer the case....I miss the days of listening to WLS in SE Texas...but then technology like streaming has made that better (in some cases anyway).....The Class As (as they are now) should keep their 750mile protection but to expect radio to go back to the ways of the 60s, etc is totally unrealistic....

and I say that as an AM station owner....

Well a big CBS station dropped the noise maker, KFI 640, could this have anything to do with Mr Walden's retirement? Hmmm.
