KMAZ-LP Not the Only Thing on 102-5 Tonight

Somebody is testing tonight on channel 273 and it's not KMAZ, because it's pretty darn clear up here near the North Belt. No audio, dead carrier. Strong enough to erase any trace of KMAZ.

Any ideas? I've had it steady for around 30 minutes now, since shortly after 7.

There's a pending LPFM app, but nothing licensed other than K273CD - Bellville. This translator is owned by the same folks bringing you 106.1 in SW Houston (K291CE). Before we quit speaking to each other, the guy running that place said they were gonna move it to Houston. In fact, there's a whole thread on that. http://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?684525-102-5-K273CD-Ready-To-Start-Jumpin

And by the way, Purple. Thanks for the report. I'm about to jump in the truck and head north on a fact-finding mission. Very personal interest in this...

Don't forget there's been some serious tropo and skip going on for the past couple of days. That station you heard could be hundreds of miles away bouncing in for the night.

That could very well be, John. I checked it again at a hair past nine, Wednesday night and 273 yielded KMKS, with an occasional appearance from KMAZ-LP. The last time I checked the Bellville translator, it was on and rebroadcasting 1090, so just maybe it's fallen silent and was pushed my way Wednesday night.

Come this weekend, I'll be setting up shop at a new location (or old one, depending on one's perspective) since I've sold my homestead. I'll get to share the joy with everyone if and when KRUT-LP at 94-9 comes on the air, as well as the new 101-7 LPFM being installed on the tower behind Doctors Hospital on Tidwell. Heck, I'm able to see the tower on that one from the backyard of the old house. Hey StevenNOLA, looks like we'll be nearly neighbors!

Purple, the 101.7 LPFM is still just an app -- and one of many of Cesar Guel's that are currently in FCC limbo purgatory...

The one for 94.9, however, was granted a construction permit to a cell phone tower on N Shepherd just north of Crosstimbers at the location shown in the following picture. They don't have a lease, never had reasonable assurance they could lease, and the tower owner is not certain they would even allow an LPFM on the tower. A whole lot of extra grounding protections would have to be done to prevent interference with cellular equipment. In any event, they won't get much range from this short stick.

The license was issued to a church named Temple de Dios, which has now changed its name to Iglesia Christiana La Zarza. I have offered them a free perch on our 200 foot tower, but even with the freebie they don't have the money to build out the station. I considered building it for them, but after consultations with the FCC, I was told that's a big no-no. No entity other than the licensee can build an LPFM, and once it is built it cannot be sold. The FCC says they won't even consider transferring (for no consideration) an LPFM license between nonprofits until it has been continuously operating for 3 years.

Of course, if this one ever gets built... is there any doubt what will be its programming?

Welcome back to the area!

I've been curious about 94.9 (KRUT) too but I thought it was licensed to this tower based on the recnet maps:

This office has since been abandoned and taken over by weeds. The tower has different monopole antennas than in the photo. Could a monopole be used for a LPFM?

The tower of license is ASRN# 1269408, which is located right behind OReilly Auto Parts on N. Shepherd at Martin Street. There is no building for this tower. Just a fenced enclosure with equipment boxes.

Thanks, Steven. I guess the old sayin' is true. You can take the 'hood rat out of the 'hood, but you'll never take the 'hood out of the 'hood rat, lol.

Joe, that's rather interesting, and I saw where the application had the Templo De Dios name as the applicant. Funny, as a portion of my family on my mother's side is up in Mexia, Texas. Lo and behold, Templo De Dios has a 2 pack of translators on the air up there. K221FI & K268BQ. I wondered if there was any relationship between the two. Glad to know that 101-7 app may never see the light of day too. I thought KRUT was to be constructed on the tower by the old HPD substation, now COH Maintenance building, on N. Shepherd. Did not realize it's the cell tower behind O'Reilly. Sure glad they didn't take you up on the offer. I run my pt 15 on 94-9, and of course, it's coming with me to Parkway. I already realize KRUT, is at some point, going to force a change on my end if it comes to fruition.

As best I can tell, the LPFM app for 101.7 is DOA. https://www.fcc.gov/document/dismissal-fourteen-lpfm-applications
