Two New Faces on CBS 5

On CBS 5 Weekend News, Lina De Florias anchored (in for Adam Longo?) and Ashlee De Martion did the weather (identified as a "forecaster"). Lina did a very good job anchoring the newscast, coming across as professional, knowledgeable, and comfortable at the desk. Ashlee seemed decent at presenting the weather.

I noticed Lina over the past week or two. I wasn't sure if she was part of Channel 3 doing work on 5 or someone specifically hired to work on 5 since I couldn't find her in the news bios for either stations.

Ashlee DeMartino was the weekend AM weather anchor at KGTV (ABC-10) San Diego for the last few years and also worked as a field reporter three days during the week. She is an ASU grad, Cardinals cheerleader and has family in Arizona (I think the family was a bigger part in her decision to leave San Diego though the unstable seas at KGTV probably was as big a factor).

Both Ashlee and Lina were reporting tonight on the 10pm newscast. I was less than impressed by Kris Pickel though. She seemed nervous and kept looking down. It was quite distracting. Not a great debut on what I believe was her first newscast (apparently Sean is off). Hopefully, she will get better.

Kris is a perfectly capable anchor and she's actually been anchoring on 5 for a couple of weeks now.

@2son -- While I didn't realize that she had been anchoring at CBS 5 for a couple of weeks, it still was a poor performance on Monday night. Perhaps there were technical problems with the teleprompter or something similar. She kept looking down, seemed lost, and appeared to be nervous. Perhaps someone from CBS 5 can tell us what was going on.

Honestly, Lina De Florias did much better over the weekend than Kris did on Monday night.

Well, I cannot honestly say anything about that specific broadcast as I wasn't watching it (and her "nervousnesss" or whatever may have been attributed to something technical considering their makeshift set appears to be in a confined space as they are getting their actual set put into place); however, I did watch her for several years when she was an anchor at KOLD in Tucson prior to her stints in Sacramento and Cleveland and based upon what I saw, she is certainly a capable anchor.

Fair enough! However, I am simply judging her on what I saw on Monday night. After seeing endless promos over the weekend, I tuned in to see the special person that Sean recommended all weekend long. I simply was not impressed by her performance. I will note that Lina De Florias did fine over the weekend on the temporary set.

Hopefully, this isn't a "Patti Kirkpatrick" situation where she phoned it in for the 8 years since I got to Phoenix, but everyone who has been in Phoenix for 20 years claims I'm wrong.

Lina De Florias was anchoring on 3TV this evening, subbing for Heather Moore. I thought the News Director for 3 and 5 had said that the anchor teams would be totally separate, although reporters would be shared.

While CBS5 hasn't updated their website with the additions of Lina and Ashlee, I believe both are considered part of the reporter pool, that may occasionally get called in to sub as an anchor. You will probably NOT see one of the regular anchors for 3 or 5 filling in on the other station.

Well, I thought that extended to substitute anchoring as well. Up until this point, I don't believe that CBS 5 anchors have shown up on 3TV or vice versa. Obviously, we are going to see more of this over time.

Another point is that weather personnel are never shared either -- even though weekend evenings would be a good time to cross-utilize weather anchors. Steve Garry is the primary sub on CBS 5, while Rich Dalquist is the primary sub on 3TV. I thought we would see some cross-utilization of weather anchors before news anchors.

Speaking of website pictures, Bruce Haffner CBS5 bio has him wearing a CBS5 hat. His 3TV picture, which looks exactly like his CBS 5 picture, the hat doesn't have a logo. . So Bruce either A. changed hats or B. logo was either added or erased.

Lina has been subbing on 3 and 5 quite a bit. She joined Adam Longo on Sunday night on 5 (wonder if that could be permanent). She really enhanced the newscast. Tonight, she appears to be subbing for Heather Moore on GEAZ.

Looks like they photoshopped the logo out for 3.

It's been years since I've been inside 3, but my lasting memory was how they crammed all of the 3TV news sets into one tiny space, but since you'd never do a cross shot from the news desk to the interview set and they had so many looks to choose from it appeared enormous on the air. Are they doing something similar for 5 or are they just taking over the production studio across the hall?

Don't know which space they are using. However, 3 and 5 have some newscasts on at the same time. Therefore, I would guess that there have to be separate studios.

She seems like nice person, and can read the news professionally when she wants to. Trouble is, she's acting like an over-the-hill cheerleader for the most part, not a news anchor. I can't believe she got away with this BS in Cleveland, if she did. Tucson, maybe, but not a second-ten market. Kris and Sean need to be news anchors, not Abbott and Costello.

As far as I'm concerned, she's wearing out her welcome. Fast. One Tara Hitchcock at Meredith is more than enough.

One step forward and three steps backward........

As a long-time viewer of KTVK, 3TV, the changes have degraded their newscasts and not improved them.... The same is true for KPHO, CBS5. The best talent on both stations is either gone or
on it's way out........ except for GMA on 3TV.

I agree with Prescott Joe (partially). Ryan O'Donnell leaving was terrible for the 3 weekend morning show and moving Tess off that show was equally sad. That isn't to say the current staff is poor but Tess and Ryan were such a great pairing.

That's rather presumptive of you to assume (1) that she picks and chooses when she wants to read the news professionally (absurd) and (2) that the quality of anchors in Tucson is sub-par, but isn't/shouldn't be in larger markets. I believe you once mentioned that you rarely watch Channel 5, so if she's wearing out her welcome with you fast, change the channel.

OK, 2Son, Kris is perfect. I'm sure that 5's ratings are shooting through the roof. I'm sure she's a nice person behind the scenes. I'm sure that I did not see that newscast where she did a terrible job (it must have been someone else, because Kris couldn't have possibly had an off night). <sarcasm off>

I have given Kris and Sean a chance now for the past few weeks. The stupid commercials about Kris' unusual last name is driving me crazy. They do an okay but not outstanding job. There's a huge difference between Tucson and a top 15 market like Phoenix. Kris is okay, that's it.
