Jack-FM Playing Johnny Cash?!

On my short commute this morning I caught Jack-FM playing "I Walk The Line" by Johnny Cash, naturally I thought it was tropoduction only for the song to be followed by a Jack liner, a quick check of the Jack playlist online confirms they played Cash.

Now I'm a pretty big Cash fan, but why the hell would the 80s Pop Rocker play a 60s country tune?!

In the early days of the Edge they would mix in surf tunes like Wipeout amongst the Depeche Mode and The The cuts.
 
If they made Top 40 they got played. Even Dean Martin went to #1 in 1964 on the charts, so don't be surprised if you hear that one slapped in there someday.

I really don't get this thread, seriously I don't. Jack fm would certainly want to play this song, being a Texas jack all the better.

Uh yeah human beings 18-54, Jack fm is trying to reach them, skewing to males for sure but this is a format that plays the wide variety of songs that people of this large range of ages can generally agree on as the songs that they like best.

They love and respect Johnny Cash, he is one of the all time coolest original of his own musicians of the rock and roll era.

So much so that there was a very successful movie made about Cash 10 years ago along with immense popularity for all the music from the movie.

Dean Martin? Most people in this age group do not know Dean Martin nor care for his music. Do you not see the difference between these 2 artists in respect to the demo this station targets?

It is only about playing music for the target demographic. Any charts from a time before most these people were born are completely irrelevant. This is so obvious about this business, I mean even if you only spent a summer of interning at one time you understand this concept.

Look the charts are a nice snapshot of that period of time, flawed as they were they were still mostly correct, the huge hits were undeniable just as they are today. They just don't mean anything at all in the context of playing music on a radio station in 2015 for people 18-54.

Coming from a historical standpoint, The Dallas JackFM has nearly always been a Classic Rocker with a few oddities mixed in. Throwing Country in the mix seemed a bit out of the norm for our Jack.

That being said, its a neat idea they are still doing a month later. So lets see where this goes.

I see that they both made No. 1 top 40 tunes. I have not spoken to most people in the 18-54 demographic, so I really don't know what means what to whom. I know what canned radio is - even when it's live - and I know that what is played is not necessarily predictable. But nice try on the explanation and trying to make me see. Haaa

Actually Jack does not target "18 - 54".

While it may vary a bit from market to market, the target is pretty much 35-54. It's definitely not an 18-34 play and does not pretend to be.

Of course, all the more reason to include occasional "Oh, Wow!" songs such as Johnny Cash.
 
The Johnny Cash Song is a Oh wow moment. CMT just recently aired a life story special which aired continuously. The special dedicated a good segment to "Walk The Line" Many pop and country stars were part of the special. Jack also skews more male than female, and with a 35-54 demographic, an occasional "Walk The Line" spin is not out of the ordinary.

During the Target Store retail campaign, we added Junior Senior "Everybody" to our playlist. We dropped it now the the ad campaign is over.

I don't think you will hear Dean Martin anytime soon.
