There's A New Oldies Station In Town

Milwaukee's WZTI (1290 AM, 100.1 FM) switched to '50s '60s & '70s Oldies on 8-25. As a fan of '50s-early '60s music I'm not sure it will mix well with late '70s music. But let's give it a try.

We've got a similar station here WACM Springfield MA simulcasting with WXCT Southington CT, both AMs with almost no nighttime coverage. The pre-Beatles music really sticks out, especially stuff like "Diana" and "A Hundred Pounds of Clay," which I've heard played close to "Baby Come Back" (Player) and "Emotion" (Samantha Sang). These stations aren't going to get ratings no matter how they choose what to play and what not to, so as long as they round up enough mom-and-pops to advertise and pay the electric bills, there's no incentive to tighten the playlist.

Corrections: (1) WZTI is 100.3 FM. (2) The media got it wrong (again). WZTI will be '60s & '70s...............no '50s. I thought it was too good to be true. Looks like it's back to internet radio for me.

The media got it wrong. There will be no '50s. WRIT is Milwaukee's top rated station and it plays '60s & '70s. It looks like WZTI is going after a piece of the action.

I was listening today and an announcement ON THE STATION said they would be playing music from the late '50s to the late '70s -- so I think you will hear some '50s music. And while WRIT continues to play -some- '60s music, there's absolutely nothing from the early '60s, and they are playing and promoting more and more '80s music. So although I doubt WZTI will make a big dent -- their AM (distorted audio) and FM (limited coverage) signals both leave a lot to be desired -- they are in fact playing a different set of recordings, more traditional (OK, "true") oldies, than WRIT.

Let me walk back my previous statement about music from the '50s on WZTI. It is true that the announcement on the station and their statements to the press mention music from the late '50s. Nevertheless, I just checked their entire playlist (on their website: http://www.milwaukeesparty.com/) since they flipped Tuesday at noon. In that +24 hour period they haven't played a single song from the '50s -- not one. There have been a couple each hour or so from the early '60s -- and in fact the oldest songs they have played were hits IN 1960. But nothing from the '50s, at least yet. Also interesting: not one Elvis Presley single.

You're right about the signal. I was 9 miles south of downtown today and was losing the FM signal. I also didn't hear stereo from songs that I know are availabe in stereo. Maybe it was the signal or maybe they're not broadcasting in FM stereo.

It's been a few days since I've checked their playlist -- and I noticed that a few '50s songs have been played after all! In the last 12 hours, three songs, all from 1958, were played: "C'mon Everybody" by Eddie Cochan; "Lollipop" by The Chordettes; and "Tequila" by The Champs. So if you're an artist whose name begins with a "C" and your single hit the charts in 1958, looks like you have a chance!

WZTI says they are the True Oldies Channel. Are they actually broadcasting Scott Shannon's format, or local talent using the True Oldies database?

Chris Lash had a True Oldies format in Knoxville, until recently. He had voicetracked talent throughout the day (including Chuck Brinkman.)
