WAVL is silent

WAVL 910 in Apollo PA is silent and for sale. The transmitter site is nice although the building will need a little TLC if it has not been updated in the last two years. I visited the transmitter site about a month before Stephen and I closed on WZUM in 2013. At that time, they had a 6KW BE transmitter running at 5KW. They had a 1KW tube Collins that still fired up and could be put on the air.

At that time, the manager had an over inflated idea of the station's value and we never got close to doing a deal. Today, I spoke with Ray Rosenblum who is representing the station's owner and the price is a lot more reasonable.

Deja vu, Matta Broadcasting originally had a construction permit for 910 AM .They changed to 1550 Aiming for 5 KW Fulltime.at that time , WHOD was Asking for 860 AM and WAVL wanted 890 , The FCC did not like the Stations so Close. WHEN Matta asked for 1550,WAVL asked for 910 and all Were Approved.
 
May 19 1947 WAVL Applied for a construction permit to move from 890 with 250 watt's to 910 with 1,000 watts. On July 14 1947 WAVL Applied for 100 watt's night. WKFB Middletown Ohio also applied for 100 watt's night. In Sept 1951 WAVL 's nighttime request was denied.But WPFB'so was granted to this day they are 100 watt's Night. Jan 28 1976 WAVL was Granted a construction permit to up power to 5,000 watt's directional. There 69 watts night time is directional and I was receiving it in the parking lot of the VA Medical Center in Aspinwall on a Delco truck radio.

I would love to have 1KW on 910 instead of 1KW on 1550 but we would have to recut all of the jingles. I guess we would have to retire the "Top Of The Dial" jingle.
 
You would lose 2 jingles "top of the dial" and "1550 WZUM ".you might get 2500 watt's daytime,
DUPLEX off AM 860 or 1510 Towers maybe do some maintenance for them, fair night power, With a Pgh city grade signal 24/7.

1510 is too close to 1550 so that site is out. The 860 site is a possibility. They have two towers not being used during the day. We wouldn't need an expensive duplexer.
 
The FCC's newsletter is showing they accepted the application from Colonial Radio Group to purchase WAVL. In about two months, the transfer should happen.
