Phoenix Radio Ratings: September 2015

Sept 6+ Is KEZ Playing Xmas Music?

KEZ's domination continues in the insignificant 6+ September ratings. They must be playing Xmas music when we're not listening!

1 KEZ 6.5
2 KOOL
KSLX 5.9
3 KFYI 5.4
4 KUPD 5.0
5 KMZP 4.9
6 KYOT 4.6
7 KMLE
KTAR/F 3.9
8 KNIX
KZON 3.4
9 KZZP 3.2
10 KDKB 3.1

So how did Lumberyard 14~Forty do with the most powerful HD~Two signal in the Southwest and a week and a half on 92~Seven?
0.2, down from 0.3 last month and 0.5 two months ago. But don't do anything Kookie...the Goldminers have a plan!

KTAR-FM 2.6

News/talk only when they can capitalize upon it -- i.e., back to 7pm closing time when they flip to Beans and Rice Radio and infomercials.

The 1440 translator wasn't on through most of the rating period.

True dat. But why isn't Mother Hubbard promoting the 92~Seven frequency on Lumberyard 14~Forty? She promotes the HD~Two, but not the translator. hmmmm...is there a possibility that worn out oldies isn't the future for 92~Seven? Tune in to Action Central News tonight at 10pm for an investigative report by Los Buckeye Boyz.

Note to moderator: please feel free to merge the other September Phoenix ratings thread into this one - Dr. Akbar was too quick while I dilly-dallied my posting.
Or maybe Nurse Jeff navigates the keyboard with his (Taylor) Swift fingers back at the Buckeye Media Hut while the good Doctor directs...:)

Anyone have demo rankings for KDKB? They've been on the air for a year now and I am curious how they are doing since they have yet to show up in the top 5 according to the PPM analysis.

You give us far too much credit. We're just a bunch of Buckeye Bozos who occasionally stumble into irrelevant topics and post them here. 6+ is definitely irrelevant, but most everyone knows that. The money demos you posted are relevant, so a big tip of the fez to pjc1961.

I'm not saying this to pick on KTAR-FM, because frankly everyone in the market turns off the lights and hits the door at 7:00.

At what point did radio cede the hours of 7 to midnight to television?

I mean, adult formatted radio stations stopped paying attention after 7:00 long ago, accepting that the majority of the audience is watching prime time TV, so nights are filled with Deliliah, Mario Lopez, Dave Ramsey, or voice tracks.

But CHR somewhere along the way stopped caring about teens and young adults at night too. When I was growing up there were night jocks who owned this town and went directly to the young end of the audience because that's who was using radio. Now you plug in the STORQ and press play for radio in a can. Your syndicated show running off of NexGen or Wide Orbit isn't going to cruise Central, crash a homecoming, or camp out on A Mountain and protect the Gold. It's also not special enough for appointment listening, either.

I get that the revenue dries up at night so you don't want to spend too much money on the daypart. But did the industry make that happen or is this the natural order of how people use radio?

Yes and yes. The industry made it happen because people use radio differently today than when you were a young whipper snapper. Guess the question to axe is: are people under the age of 18 still listening to radio?

...and the debt-drowned industry cut cut cut costs with expensive (?) night and overnight talent (?) being the logical first ones forced to find new careers. And the Mario "Premium Choice" Teshes of the world are a relative bargain, even if their only purpose is to keep the lights on until the only 50% voice tracked morning show begins. (See also: Seacrest, Ryan) The chicken vs. egg thing of whether radio got cheap first or people's habits changed is moot because the horse is already out of the coop, as they say. Another question to axe would be "If you were 18 again, and had all the media choices that exist today, would radio be in your mix?"

Name all the local hosts on all the other media choices. Are there local Phoenix hosts on Sirius? Pandora? Spotify?

Maybe local talent, especially in overnight, is not a big priority with today's radio audiences. Or not as important as it was for previous generations.

Just axin'

It's tied for 11th in 18-49 and 25-54.

I presume you mean it has been a year since the Hubbard cluster shuffled format focus, as KDKB has been going on for decades...

Los Buckeye Boyz would like to axe the Voltairites if fans won't be showing up for the Zac Brown Band's concert on 10/08 because their hit "Loving You Easy" doesn't encode well for PPM? Seems there's something about that song (and others) that those quirky meters don't like. But hey, BANG 545 must work just fine as the Nurse & I continue to hear it on top Valley stations.

Go figure!
