Check it out! WBAP Dallas heard in Hawaii (video)

Based on that, I'd say you'll be pulling in Japan and Korea!

The nice thing about Hawaii is that you have about two times the number of frequencies to DX... the 10 kHz Americas allocations and the 9 kHz Asia and Oceania allocations.

He will definitely get them. They come blasting into Hawaii later in the evening in Nov, Feb & Mar. I'm not sure about Oct since I've never been there then. First time I DXed there in Nov 78, I was listening for the east coast of the mainland and after around 10PM Japan & Korea started overwhelming the band. Some of those stations run tremendous power.

You don't know how EASY it is to get Japan, Korea, China and Australia. Just try 774 and 747 khz, after about 10-11PM HDT/HST. You should hear 300KW of booming NHK-2 Japanese programming from Akita (774) and Sapporo (747).
HLCA 972 from Korea is always strong, as is HLAZ 1566 from Jeju with religious programming.
For Australia, 702, 612 and 774 are good frequencies. Tahiti 738 is EASY. 1098 Marshall Islands is EASY. Have fun!

I suppose Australia and the Marshall Islands are in English? But not Tahiti or the Asian blowtorches?

V7AB in the Marshalls is mostly in Marshallese. That's the big community station with 5 kw on 1098 and the more widely heard.

Except for some low power ethnic "minority stations" everything in Australia is in English. New Zealand, sometimes easier to hear than Australia, has a bunch of Maori stations and, IIRC, a couple in Chinese.

Probably all the Coquí frogs outside.

And on 780, there was a station behind KKOH Reno that was most likely WBBM Chicago.

Got no official ID but I did hear something about the Bears.

Great stuff, gar. Keep it coming! WBAP was the first mainland station I heard that Saturday night when I was on the north shore of Hawaii in my mom's '62 Impala with a stock Delco radio. WBBM. of course, is a nice catch in its own right. But it's a little more impressive, IMHO, given that for whatever reason, WBBM doesn't seem to be getting out quite as well as it used to. I predict you'll snag WLS sooner rather than later. The other two Chicago blowtorches might be a little more difficult. There's a 720 on Kauai, but you could probably null that one, but you'd still have KDWN aimed right at you. As for WSCR....isn't there a local on 670 in Hilo?

At any rate, you're sure to have loads of fun, seeing what you can come up with. Happy hunting!

There's a local 670 KPUA in Hilo and it's not that strong here during the day even though I'm less than 10 miles away and it's 10 kw non directional.

At night, it still makes it difficult to hear what's on the adjacent frequencies but I can hear KNBR weakly sometimes.

On 890, it's a quite strong KHIC from Arroyo Grande, California but there's always something lurking in the background too.

On 720, it's KDWN Las Vegas with something else lurking in the background.

I don't get anything on 720 from Hawaii.

You must be far enough away from Kauai that you can easily null the 720 there. When I've been on Oahu it dominates 720 and I can't even hear KDWN. The lurker in back of KHIC might be KDXU, but WLS is possible under the right conditions.
When I heard WLS in 1978 they were the only station on 890 until late in the evening when the far east stations took over.
Love your reports. Keep 'em coming!

Last night, our local 670 KPUA was off the air and I took advantage of it.

I was able to hear KBOI from Boise and it was constantly fluttering because of another station on the same frequency way in the background.

And on 870, I was hearing a talk station that was fading in and out but long as I listened, I never got any ID. I will try again tonight.

Anyone know if any Alaska stations have been heard in Hawaii?
