97.5 Translator in Tyler

It seems a new translator has signed on in the Tyler area, rebroadcasting American Family Radio. It's on 97.5, which is the same frequency KWRW is moving to. I'm not sure when that move is going to take place, but I understand it is to be very soon. I guess getting this on now so it can be displaced by KWRW is part of the plan so the FCC will allow it to be moved to a new frequency. I'm not sure where it can be moved to though....

It does seem a tad foolish, doesn't it? Aren't they aware of 97-7's move up to Troup, and the resulting channel change to 97-5? Perhaps they'll offer some unGodly amount of money at the owner of the 97-9 translator (wink, wink) to move this new translator there.

What's going on up there in Tyler these days? First 92-1 takes a call exceptionally close to KWRW's longtime set, now a translator signs on to the channel 97-7 is attempting to move to. Marie Whitehead must be really scratching her head, probably much like I am.

Let's just say things in East Texas are "interesting." Since Alpha Media has purchased KYKX, KOYE, KOOI and KKUS, things may get more "interesting." If there is good news to report, the old KCUL-AM in Marshall has been purchased by a friend who loves radio for what it is. He's changed the call letters to KZEY and programs "Old School" R&B music. At least on some levels, there is hope for radio.

Wish I Was In Tyler Texas Way Better Then Austin Radio!!

Wait a second. Isn't 97.5 rebroadcasting KTBB 600? They were recently on 95.7 but just moved to 97.5.

That's at least a part of what is "interesting." The translator had a CP for 97.5 but was never built, until a couple of weeks ago. I'm going to speculate that it was put on the air to save the CP, as KWRW would bump it when it moved into the market. Since the translator was on the air first, they can now apply to move it to a different frequency because they were displaced by a full power station. If they'd never built it, then the CP would be lost. Now, the good question is where is it going to move to?

KTBB-FM has been on and off the air today, I guess transmitter problems?

I've tried to pick it up several times, but it always seems to be off. Naturally, I'm concerned about what it does to 97.9 in Tyler. I think it will be OK on most radios, but with a cheap radio from Walgreen's, all bets are off.

Now that we're some five months removed from this original post, what was the outcome of the displaced 97-5 translator? Where did it wind up going and what/who is it translating?

The outcome is silence for K248CC. There is a construction permit in place to move it to channel 291 with no other changes to the facility. That was granted June 29th. It was granted STA to remain silent 2 days later. Hopefully Chuck, gbranch, or anyone else up that way will let us all know when it lights up.

This should be fun when the tropo gets going. KHKS in DFW is co-channel.
