Nighttime AM bandscan from Mountain View, Hawaii

Here's what it sounds like here to scan up the AM dial at night.

There was a higher than usual amount of annoying interference from the typical electronic things of today that get in the way of AM DXing.

Also, KSFO is usually present on 560, as is KDWN on 720, and KKOB on 770.

KGO was coming in on 810 earlier too.

The frogs are so loud, it would be as much noise interference or more so than the electrical sounds inside.

Seems as though the band was quiet. Was that KCBS on 740? I was surprised there was no KTNQ which is usually pretty strong.

Good job on KGO! They do not send a lot of power to the west AT ALL.

Wait a few months. You will adapt to the coquí sounds and you won't even "hear" them.

I'm at the point where I don't notice them until I go outside.

Last night was a slightly less than average night for reception on some frequencies but a little better on others.

KGO is almost a regular but it never comes in as strong as the non directional 50 kw California stations.

What you hear on 740 is from Hawaii. KCIK from Kihei.

I might otherwise have a shot at hearing KCBS if it weren't for that.

I'd say the most persistent strongest signal is 580 KMJ from Fresno.

KEAR 610 from San Francisco came in good enough at times last night to ID.

Would have been fun to be out here and pick it up back in the old KFRC days!

I'm 215 miles from Honolulu.

At night, many of their stations come in such as 590 KSSK, 650 KPRP, 690 KHNR, 760, KGU, 830 KHVH, 880, KHCM, 1040 KLHT, just to name a few.

Many are strong, as you can hear from the bandscan.

Interesting about KGO. A few years back, I posted that I had posted in one of these threads that I had heard KGO in Maui on my 1994 visit. David, and I think one or two other guys pointed out that KGO's pattern doesn't favor Hawaii at all, so I basically came to the conclusion that "my memory must have been playing tricks on me". Hmmmm....maybe not.

While I'm now completely unsure about KGO, I am certain about KTNQ and KNX being the strongest mainland signals that night outside by the pool at my hotel location just north of Lahaina.

What video camera do you use to record? If it has a line-in or microphone jack, maybe you could use a direct patch cable from the radio to the camera (maybe 8 to 12 feet long or so) and eliminate the frogs, so be able to record outside. :) (Just be careful to set the audio levels so it doesn't overdrive, I think it's good to avoid having it hit higher than -3 dBfs on the strongest/loudest stations, but try to have it above -12 dB if possible on the same stations.)

No chance of getting a direct connection, as I have one of those Cisco Flip video cameras.

Last night, 880 KRVN was booming in on and off in the null of KHCM from Honolulu which has a good signal for only 2000 watts.

I tried to get a good video of KRVN but I couldn't time their official ID with a good signal. But they were always mentioning Nebraska.

And I can say that KGO is actually a regular here, though much of the time it falls below the listenable level.

Thanks.

And on 700, what I keep hearing is what sounds like some very weak station attempting to break through the floor of the background noise level.

Looks like we are in the null of KALL.

I can't rule out WLW.

If any of you have suggestions on what to try for from the eastern part of the country, please let me know.

I was in Kona last Christmas, right on the black lava, but next to the ocean. My DXing time was limited, but heard some interesting things just before local sunrise. Just using a barefoot PR-D5, heard the Chinese on 1593, along with a few of the Japanese (774 is the one I remember). In the evening I heard the big Californians mentioned above, KFBK being the most consistent. I recall catching KKOB but nothing else east of there.

On Christmas Eve around 10pm local time, on 1590 a station playing pop music with SS announcer was fighting it out with someone playing traditional Christmas music. Couldn't get an ID but maybe KQLO? The strongest Mexican listed is XEVOZ with a regional Mexican format.

At any rate, seemed like a great place to DX, band was pretty clear compared to the mainland.
