KIRO Radio Turns 80

There call letter approval came though on September 19, 1935 but they did not launch the change till October 15 1935. During this time they were also making the change from 650Khz to 710Khz.

Link to letter from the FCC. A very young FCC they had only been un existence for 15 months when they sent out this letter to KPCB.

From what I can tell they were operating on 710 on experimental authority till 1936 or 1937. Lots of interesting reading in the 1935-1940 FCC file. The one interesting thing in reading the early applications for the move from 650 to 710 and even the application for their 50KW power increase is that all the FCC rules are just 3 digit numbers. When they reference a rule it's rule 167 not the long number they are now.

haha, but really not true anymore. The move to FM has, atleast my Seattle friends are telling me, increased their younger demos. You can't get those exact figures on sites like this, so if anyone has some more exact figures please weigh in, of course without violating Neilsons terms of service!

Quickie Trivia: What did the PCB in KPCB stand for?

No cheating....

Congrats KIRO - You were always the news leader in Seattle for along time.

KIRO-FM is doing fine. The FM signal is strong throughout most of the metro, and the programming is generally strong. Ross is undoubtably one of Seattle's best radio broadcasters. I really like the Curley show in mid-morning, and Ron & Don are very good as well. The rest of the daytime line-up, well, my mother always said...if you can't say anything nice...

I'd say that happened when they did away with the PM news in favor of Ron & Don.

I would agree with you, but it seems the news product started to slide when KIRO radio and TV divorced in 1994. (Unfortunately, Dumb and Dumber seem to get good ratings...does that say something about the radio audience in Seattle?)
