Top of the hour

Not sure how many people listed to KKFR anymore, but today I heard on the top of the hour say KEXX Gilbert - Phoenix, then KKFR Mayer-Phoenix. Anyone know why? Does that mean that KMVA is all alone again?

Alone Again, Naturally?

The legal ID is KKFR and KEXX HD~Two...but because it's delivered so fast and so far in the background compared to the bed, it's easy to think KKFR and KEXX are combined. It's KMVA 97~Five and KEXX 103~Nine that simulcast as Trending Radio.

Isn't KOAI the one with KEXX HD~Two?

Dunno...not sure if KKFR operates HD~Two and HD~Three. Because the legal ID is given so rapidly and buried under driving rhythm, we thought we heard HD~Two. If it wasn't for the fact the station gives Nurse Jeff and me splitting headaches, we'd listen again.

How is the lamp timer ideeein' with the new FM flamethrower?

Very well...doin' the translator ID at the three prescribed times every day. It is not done over a musical bed, unlike the ID's for KAZG and KDKB HD~Two. Mother Hubbard does a far better job on the technical side than Gumpdusky ever did. With the proposed changes to the Ancient Modulation band, Mom will be able to get a translator for KDUS. Just as the FCC junked up the AM band, the FM band is following in close pursuit. YIKES!

Practical question... (although nothing is ever practical)

If the solution to revitalizing AM is to give station owners an opportunity to buy and move in FM translators, why doesn't the FCC have them go ahead and sign the AM off after the FM is on air? The only way to lower the noise floor of Ancient Modulation is to turn a bunch of stations off.

A Mexican-style AM-FM migration would be a great idea in a lot of places, but the AM and FM stations would have to have comparable coverage areas.

Mexico had plenty of open dial space, as there were about 900 FMs for 110,000,000 population. The US has about 10,000 full FMs for 330,000,000 which means that nearly everywhere the dial is saturated. Oh, and Mexico does not have translators or LPFM stations filling the dial.

So the Mexican system just will not work in the US.

Allow Los Buckeye Boyz to repeat what they said earlier on this topic: "Just as the FCC junked up the AM band, the FM band is following in close pursuit." Look what I Heart just paid for a translator in Denver to go with their 50kw blowtorch KOA. YIKES!!

The lamp timer may be using IDK for the translator. Yes, the FM dial is about to become very crowded. I think you will several of the AM's that take advantage of a translator, sell and be added to groups in selected markets.

As the Nurse and I understand the proposed change, AM's without an FM will be allowed to acquire a translator from up to 250 miles from their COL. Rule kicks in sometime in 2017. And dig this: Class C & Class D Ancient Modulation stations get a 90 day jump on everyone else. So that means KFYI~Two (aka KOY) will be heard on FM, in spite of zero interest in whatever it is their programming right now. Plus the stand alone that gets an FM has to hold the license for 4 years, and if they sell they both go together. That will definitely improve the value of the AM station.

Now keep in mind Los Buckeye Boyz are of limited intelligence and maybe someone else will correct us. But the fact remains the FM dial will be junked up like never before: 92~One, 92~Three, 92~Five, 92~Seven, 92~Nine, etc.

YIKES~one YIKES~three YIKES~five YIKES~seven YIKES~nine!

It's getting like that now. Try hitting Seek while driving down Greenway from the 51 to Kierland. Between the rimshots, translators, pirates, and LPFMs, there's a lot of bad automated radio floating in the air.

No matter what the buzz about digital, seems like everyone still wants to be on FM.

If I had an AM, I'd want to be on FM too.
