YouTube Unveils Plans for Subscription Service Dubbed 'YouTube Red'

YouTube’s Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl just unveiled You Tube Red, a $9.99 a month service ($12.99 for iOS devices) that will give subscribers ad-free access to You Tube’s videos, games and music — and enable them to download content to use offline for 30 days.

Beginning next year the package also will include original programming from some of YouTube’s more popular content providers including Maker Studios, Skybound Entertainment, Fine Brothers Entertainment, and Alpine Labs.

Beginning on October 28, U.S. subscribers can access the content on any device. In addition to the Google unit’s YouTube and Gaming apps, it plans to introduce a YouTube Music app that will complement the company’s Google Play Music subscription service.

The company plans to expand YouTube Red to other countries next year. Google won’t disclose deal terms with content creators, but says that it is “paying out the majority of revenue to our partners.”

And this from the Comments section:

TERRIBLE name! have they not heard of RedTube??

Ready for the lawsuits from content companies to begin.

Because even though they're paying out money to creators, it's never enough.

Some consider YouTube to be the devil. That's the word they use.

I've gotten Youtube ad-free and been able to keep downloaded MP4 content indefinitely for years, and plan to continue doing so. As have thousands of other people. And no, I've never paid a penny for it. It's really not that hard to do, actually. If you can edit a text file and install a plugin in Firefox you can do it too, because screw Google.

I think I shall call this approach "Youtube Blue", since red is the colour of aggression, war, danger and communism; fundamental values that Google apparently wants to promote.

I'd give it maybe a year.

ESPN's YouTube Channels Are Going Dark

ESPN’s YouTube channels are going private tonight, victims of a change in the way YouTube operates because of its new subscription service, YouTube Red.

Basically, YouTube wants all video creators who make money on their videos (like ESPN) to be a part of YouTube Red. Those who cannot agree to terms with YouTube will see their videos made private in the U.S.—unviewable to almost everybody using YouTube.

Of ESPN’s 13 YouTube “featured” channels, two of them (Nacion ESPN and X Games) are still in operation, while the other 11 are not. It’s unclear why only some channels are up and others aren’t, and whether it was YouTube or ESPN that made them private, but you can expect to see all of ESPN’s YouTube channels go private until ESPN becomes a part of YouTube Red, which might take awhile.

According to a YouTube spokesperson, ESPN’s parent company Disney has signed an agreement to be a part of the new subscription service, but ESPN is not currently included in that due to rights and legal issues. Presumably ESPN’s numerous rights deals with sports leagues somehow prevent them from joining.

Many local TV stations have YouTube channels. Do you think they'll go private too?
