WBBM Chicago heard in Hawaii!

Wow.

For a time tonight, there was another station battling it out with KKOH from Reno which is the regular on 780.

And I confirmed it was WBBM because I clearly heard "WBBM News time" at one point.

Here's the video I was able to get. KKOH is the dominant station but you can hear WBBM in the background giving a traffic report.

At the very beginning, you can faintly hear the words 'ongoing construction'.

And at right near the end of this short video, you may be able to barely hear "WBBM" but I definitely confirmed it earlier.

And at the same time, KKOB on 770 was being clobbered by another talk station and both were the same strength but not very strong.

I know there's one in Seattle but with the signal paths the way they are on 780, could it have been WABC?

Astonishing, considering that WBBM is still running the power vampire. It would be even more remarkable if WABC made it to Hawaii - all NYC stations and WBZ Boston have been absent in Texas since the IBOC debacle began.

Nicely done, Gar. Congratulations!

I was thinking along the same lines as Bruce. WBBM's signal isn't quite what it once was, but apparently it still has enough oomph to make the hop to Hawaii...with enough left to be audible with KKOH on top of it. I know there are two sides to the argument about IBOC degrading signals. I'm not smart enough to get into that. And although there are other plausible explanations aside from IBOC, the fact is that the three stations running IBOC in my area (WSCR, WBBM, and WTMJ) all have one thing in common.... They're not getting out quite as well as they used to. And that includes nighttime skywave in noise free areas.

Well a GIGANTIC congrats for WBBM in Hawaii, no less!!
Your other 770 could be CHQR in Calgary, Alberta.

Thanks, all you guys!

And you're right about CHQR. I had not considered that one.

WABC will be a real challenge.

It's interesting to think how WBBM is easier to hear in Hawaii than it is in California.

Nice catch!
I can report that from here in Ohio, WBBM has been coming in much, much better than it was back in, say, the spring or early summer. I was able to listen to many of the Cubs late-season and playoff games quite clearly on 780 AM (as painful as some of them were). In April or May, WBBM just wasn't getting out as well to this region. No idea what changed. But whatever it was, maybe that's what helped WBBM get all the way to Hawaii. Hope you can make more great catches!

That's certainly a positive development. I'm still a few weeks away from being "on the road again", but I'll definitely have to check that out for myself. Here at home, 20 or so miles from their stick, it's impossible to tell.

Schmave, can you get WBBM during the day? Next year the cubs will move to WSCR. How is your reception of them day/night?

Congrats on the reception of WBBM. Very cool! Awesome quality reception, too!

Shows just how much of a DX machine a PR-D5 can be.

Nope, not this far out. WSCR and WGN *barely* make it here daytime during the winter months and that is only on the best of radios away from a lot of interference.
By the time you get up around the Lima area, all the big Chicago stations except 1000 are audible if not listenable.
At night, all Chicago stations generally make it here. WBBM was the worst of the lot there for a while. WGN and WMVP are here loudly every night.
