Kicks 96.3 - Yes, that's right, another country station in the Upstate

Boggles my mind to see Entercom use a translator (its' first to my knowledge) to put a new country station on. But it's here http://www.kicks963.com/

Guess the Kicks format has done pretty well for them so it'll be interesting to see if it makes any dent into the two biggies' ratings.

What do the RD folks think? (For those of you who still bother to come here.... :( )

It seems something has been overlooked. On the same page, one logo says KICKS 96.3 and on the other KICK 96.3. I'm sure it's supposed to be Kicks to rhyme with 96.

Does that point to a potential stunt? Another site says possibly Urban "96.3 THE BLOCK." If it goes Urban, Entercom can shake the market, but HOT 98.1 now sounds Urban while B93.7 sounds Rhythmic?

Yeah, I think I've been duped. Apparently there are SEVEN domains registered by Entercom for 96.3 although I don't know what those are.

I don't know how well an Urban would do on a translator. But that wouldn't be any worse than a country station.

Edit: Didn't realize just how weak that translator is. If it comes in best downtown, I'd bet on an Urban AC format. It'd be a better option than trying to directly hit JAMZ/Hot and it's not here as a format either.

Kicks just flipped to variety hits under Simon 96.3. It probably isn't the final stunting, but Entercom did file a complain about a year or so ago to force Chuck to stop using the "We Play Everything" tag line (which Chuck then stopped using). So it is plausible that they had this in mind.

I'd say by Monday we'll know for sure what it is.

Simon is skewing older than Chuck from what I've heard. I'm actually thinking it would make a lot of sense for Entercom. Would serve as a buffer against the surging Earth for both Magic and Classic Rock 101. They're even giving out mugs now so could be the real deal.

Well, Simon is making an "announcement" tomorrow. I think it end up flipping to an urban format as many have suspected. What type of urban is the question.

"96.3 THE BLOCK"

One that can identify and position themselves as "The Upstate's Only Hip Hop station." A Mainstream Urban that plays the Hip Hop songs that HOT 98.1, 107.3 JAMZ nor B93.7 will play. Syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show or The Breakfast Club for morning drive. The only market is SC without an Urban station.

Well, that kinda was what I was thinking but the "announcement" was just announcing itself as Simon again.

And a source is telling me they only did that because no one believed they were here to stay.

I'm not 100% convinced yet, but another week or so and I suppose I will.

Without a mainstream urban station.

Urban AC is still urban.

And there it is....The Block... as many expected. Weird chain of events with the whole building up to the noon "announcement" and then flipping later in the day.

The Block already has almost 2k Facebook likes and Entercom is really pushing it....if this does well look for 93.3 The Block or 98.9 The Block, probably the latter since 93.3 has Clemson football and still makes a fortune having that and a format that fits it very well with it despite bad ratings and a struggling format in general (much like Clear Channel with 104.9 as rock and football are an easy sell)...I seriously believe Entercom is doing this as a test and will take advantage of the success it will probably have....107.3 has gone unchallenged for too long

It'll be interesting if they do flip Magic or The Planet. The Block will almost definitely do better on a translator than X98.5 or Chuck on 97.7 because the urban format is likely to have its largest base in the downtown area where all three of the translators probably come in best (where X and Chuck don't do as well because their formats would likely do better in the suburbs where they don't come in as well IMO -- especially X). So it will be a little difficult to extract how well it would do on a larger signal.

That said I have no doubt that with JAMZ so strong, that another full-strength urban would do better than either Magic or The Planet in terms of overall ratings.

But remember. It's NOT about ratings. It's about billing. And if 96.3 can pull in some nice billing, it's all they need. Traditionally, urban stations never bill as much as their non-urban counterparts. (Take a look at NYC when 98.7 Kiss was leased out to ESPN for their sports programming. The station was 1 of 2 urban stations in the biggest market in the country!)

Now if Myrtle Beach can get a good hip hop station instead of the crap Cumulus calls one on 98.5
They don't have an urban AC and even if Movin' sort of sounded like one, that's gone.

In the late 90s they had Hot 93.9. That went from rhythmic to mainstream CHR. I can't even remember if that one's still on the air. It was at 100.3, but that's sports now.
