Southern Delaware 1970s airchecks

Me again, about WSEA, I think we were one of the first FM rockers in the nation. Engineer Ken Sleeman put the station together. he's in the Washington D. C. area. Bob Bernard was a Jock and Sales Manager. I remember our first giveaway was a Kawasaki motorcycle. We were behind WJWL in a cinder block air raid shelter, that was in Georgetown. Great station. Where are they now?

Yes, I see it listed on an old FM Atlas as 93.5 with 2,100 watts and 350 ft antenna. I do remember the station. I heard it during the summer when visiting the Jersey Shore. Sorry I don't have any airchecks of them. I am surprised not many people recorded airchecks. Do you remember a Southern Delaware station that played a special version of the Rolling Stones "Can't Get No Satisfaction" that had an echo with phasing? I remember hearing it but forget which station played that version. Never heard it anywhere else, I think a local DJ made a special mix.

yea we would get in the South Jersey area. I'm not familiar with that Rolling Stone version. Is that frequency 93.5 still a Scott station?

I worked at WJWL-WSEA in Georgetown beginning in 1976. At the time, WJWL-AM was the more dominant of the two stations - but that changed shortly thereafter as FM caught fire. The AM was put on the air by Ed Marzoa. He was chief engineer, GM, sales mgr, talk show host, etc. I believe Steve Wallace is the engineer who put WSEA-FM on. He also had a huge library of air checks of virtually every jock who worked there for many years. Steve went to WBOC-TV in Salisbury, MD many years ago, and as far as I know, he is still an engineer there.
WJWL was a full-service AM playing pop music, a little country music, a talk show called the HotLine, local news, a Saturday-morning live music show featuring Ralph Hoebee ("The Troubador of the Eastern Shore") and even obituaries. WSEA was at various times Top 40 and AOR. It was a great sounding station considering the size of the market...and produced many great jocks who went on to major market stations in Jacksonville, Las Vegas, and DC. When it was Top 40 - they did a "SEA 93 Sun Check" for people listening on the beach. A girls voice was played at :15 and :45 saying "SEA 93 Sun Check - it's time to turn over." When they flipped to Album Rock they kept the SEA 93 moniker for a while - and had a cart machine hooked up to the mic switch, and sfx of seagulls played behind the announcers voice.
I loved working there.

I came to WJWL in June of 1969, they put me on a Country show in the afternoons, Country Chuck. Then I went on WSEA FM as Chuck "Main Man" Manning. By the way it was Ken Sleeman that put together WSEA. I believe he's working in the Washington DC area.

WOW--I did not know that the OC market could sound worse than it does now--the jock from WWTR-FM was horrible. Nasaly, puky and typical of a "forced" presentation style

I helped sign on WWTR FM when it was in Bethany Beach. The owner was J. Parker Connor, an FCC attorney. We were playing AC. I believe that frequency is in Ocean City now. We were located above their Real Estate office in Bethany.

Hello everyone. Hopefully some of the people who contributed to this thread are still here. I'm trying to ID the DJ in the 95.9 WWTR-FM clip. Can anyone assist? I've confirmed it's not Chuck Manning (Chuck - can you verify?) because he left in December of 1974 and this aircheck is clearly from the summer of 1975. Can anyone provide any insight? Thanks.

I listened to WSEA in Georgetown from their very beginning until they changed the format to Top 40 / Disco in the late '70's, which was also right around the same time they went stereo. Up until the change to Top 40 / Disco, the station only broadcast a mono signal. All of the DJs there were awesome, Mike Kaiser, (Tiger) Bob Bernard, Rich Langlois (R.B. Burd), Tom (Thumb) Webb, and Chuck (The Main Man) Manning, but my favorite was "Poe" (Lee Dick) who came on late at night with his "underground" show. Man... he played some really obscure stuff! Ever so often, he would play entire album sides, such as Tarkus (Emerson, Lake, and Palmer) or an entire side of Pink Floyd's Meddle. He was the only DJ that I have known to play White Bird (It's A Beautiful Day) on a regular basis. It must have been a favorite of his. I wonder whatever happened to him?

I assume WWTR's building was on Route 26. I vacation in Bethany every year and would like to look for the building.

The studios were on the second floor of the now Connor Jacobsen Realty building - 8 Pennsylvania Ave, Bethany Beach, DE.

I was the afternoon jock at SEA 93. Jack Randolph, but usually just jack. RB Bird and I took the station from CHR to progressive rock. Indeed, it was a lot of fun. I sold time to try to justify the new format. We had the studio in the back of an air-raid shelter. Herb the owner, loved cheap and this was the epitome of it. But we did have a kick ass station. Updates: Rich went on to Jacksonville, Fl, but was sadly the victim of a hit and run on his motorcycle and is a quadriplegic. Lee Dick ended up in the streets of New York and just recently passed. He was an original thought. RIP. Herb's son developed the cluster, and he passed two years ago. I am now a published author, and I am currently writing a book on the radio days. I expect it will be available sometime in 2016.

WSUX, WWTR (95.9 FM Bethany Beach), and WJDY were bought by J. Parker Connor in the mid 70s, and his then teenaged sons cut their teeth there. IR students by day, DJs by night. Matthew, JP, and Brad Connor. My late fiance, Matt Connor, passed in 2008. Brad Connor is now the mayor in Dagsboro and their family still owns Bethany Liquors in the Connor Mall, across from Wawa in Ocean View. He may be able to help you. He's on Facebook as Brad Connor. Others on WWTR were Jack Renault and Wayne Cannon.

Hello Lisa,

Thank you for the reply. I have still been trying to identify the DJ in the WWTR-FM aircheck but have continuously hit dead ends, so thank you for the additional information. I have reached out to Brad Connor and he has provided a name but it turned out to not be the individual we were looking for. He has said he would reach out again, but I have not heard anything from him. Perhaps you could contact him? I reached out to Wayne Cannon and he couldn't ID the jock either. I've reached out to many others that were in Delmarva radio in the 1970s but still have not been able to ID this mystery jock. Also tried reaching out also to Al Frazier but he didn't reply. Do you know where I can find Jack Renault and are you able to suggest other names we could try?

Thank you again for your help!

Hi Jeff,

Wow, didn't realize it had been so long since I was on here. Unfortunately, Jack Renault has passed. If neither Brad, nor Wayne, could ID, then I'm not sure who might be able to. Matt and Brad's other brother, J. P. Connor Jr. may know. I haven't had any contact with him since 2012 but as far as I know, he is still in coastal, southern Delaware. If you PM me, I can send you the email and cell I have. Thanks.
